For Advertising Information Call: 328-4340 Centennial events announced St. Francis Xavier, Rochester — The parish has planned a series of events to celebrate its 100th anniversary. On Labor Day, Monday, \September 5, parishioners will hold a picnic at Pavilion Lodge at Ellison Park from 10a.m. to 10 p.m. Those attending are asked to bring dishes to pass, beverages, and place settings. Hot dogs, hamburgers and rolls will be provided. Form- er parishioners are invited to attend and are asked to make reservations by. calling the rec- tory at (716)482-3211 by August 29. A Mass of Thanksgiving will be celebrated at the church on Saturday, October 29, at S p.m. A centennial banquet will follow at the Mapledale Party House with a cash bar at 6:30 p.m. and a buffet dinner at 7:30. Marian year closing planned St. Mary's, Rochester — The parish has planned a special program, \Mostly Marian Music: Ave Through the Ages;' to close the Marian year on Monday, August IS, beginning at 5 p.m. in the church. The program will include vocal and organ music written in honor of Mary from antiqui- ty to present. Special emphasis will be given to various settings of \Ave Maria.\ The musi- cians will include Darlene Flynn, the parish's music director, Kate Hearden, and St. Mary's organist, Phillip Lioi. The music portion of the program will run * until 5:40 p.m., and will be followed by Mass. A wine and cheese reception from 6:30 to 7 will conclude the evening. All are welcome. Parish Notes Picnic in the park scheduled Our Lady of Lourdes, Elmira — The par- ish's annual picnic will be held Tues., Aug. 16 at the Youth Camp located at Harris Hill. Ac- tivities are scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. The supper will begin at 6 p.m. The parish will provide chicken, hot dogs, and soft drinks. Those attending are asked to bring specific items based on the first letter of their last names: A -G, appetizers or munchies; H-Q, salad, vegetable dish or casserole; R - Z, dessert. The evening will include games for children, and music. A $1 donation per family is requested. Marian event set for Cenacle St Monica's, Rochester — The parish will sponsor a special Marian year closing talk at the Cenacle, Sunday, August 14, from 2 to 4 p.m. The talk will include time for prayer, and refreshments. Continental breakfast planned Church of the Assumption of Our Lady, Fairport — To celebrate the parish's feast day, August IS, a continental breakfast will be served after each of the Sunday Masses, Au- gust 14. Marjorie Hart, a parishioner at St. Joseph's, Penfiekt, displays a plaque presented to her this spring by parents, students and faculty of the St. Ambrose Religious Education Pro- gram, which she has coordinated the past 15 years. The program provides religious training and sacramental preparation for children and young adults who are mental- ly handicapped or learning disabled. • • • Two Fairport residents have been awarded the annual Mercy High School Parents' Board Scholarships. Amy Carr and x Katie Clifford each received $500 awards. Both students were involved in a wide variety of activities and leadership roles at the school and in the com- munity. This rail, Carr will be entering St. Bonaventure University, and Clifford will be attending John Carroll University. • • • Bishop Kearney High School teachers Valerie Howe and Brenda Koto-Banes partic- ipated in the National Science Foundation's Environmental Impact Analysis Project con- ducted under the auspices of SUNY Brockport at Braddock Bay from June 27 through. July 29. The purpose of the program 'was to collect data to formulate a draft environmental im-. pact statement for a hypothetical project: the expansion of the Braddock Bay Marina. Neighbors Sue Golden Cramer has been appointed grants development director at Nazareth Col- lege of Rochester. Her duties will include iden- tifying and soliciting sources of grant funding, and working with faculty and college adminis- trators to develop, write and edit proposals. Cramer holds a master's degree in Spanish lan- guage and literature from Washington Univer- sity, St. Louis, Mo., and a certificate in grant writing and administration from St. John Fish- er College. • • • Ed Ranalli, director of recruitment and public relations at Aquinas Institute, was a member of the team from the City of Roches- ter School District that attended the first Lake- side Health Promotion Conference at Wells College, June 26 to July 1. The main thrust of the conference was to have schools and school districts deal with the concept of well- ness of the entire person, not just the body. • • • The Rochester Polish Peoples Home and the Michael Stanley Broki Scholarship Fund have awarded six college scholarships to the follow- ing area students: Gail Anne Balcerzak, of Cardinal Mooney High School; Wendy-Ann Fabian of St. John Fisher College; Jennifer Jean Kaleta; Christine Marie Kowalewski; Michael J. Szostak; and Mark Andrew Urban- ski. Each scholarship is worth $2,000 and is given to a student who is a resident of Mon- roe County and is of Polish background. • • • St. Monica's parishioner Rose Serrano, a special education, teacher in the City School District, has been presented with the J. Ernest Du Bois Educator's Award by the Genesee Val- ley District PTA. The award is given annually to an active educator who works directly with students arid is a PTA member serving on an executive board or a committee to promote a special program. Serrano has been involved in leadership development programs and has served as historian and president of her PTA unit This summer, she directed St. Monica's Vacation Bible School
