McFarland — and to mark his retirement after 23 years of service to St. Patrick's — on June 4 and 5. *• The activities will include a lunch for Father McFarland and the children of the parish in the parish hall on June 4. On Sunday, June 5, a music program will begin in the church at 3:15 p.m., followed by a 4 p.m. Mass con- celebrated by Father McFarland, Bishops Den- nis W. Hickey and Joseph ,L. Hogan, and a number of other priests. A reception, dinner and dancing at Marvin's Country Club will fol- low the Mass. For ticket information, call the parish office at (315)986-5671. Festival focuses on family fun St. Philip Neri, Rochester — The parish will hold a summer festival — its first in 10 years — on June 4 and 5. The festival will empha- size family activities. On June 4, events, games and prizes espe- cially for children will take place between 2 and 5 p.m. From 6 to midnight, the festival will be for the entire family. The activities will con- tinue on Sunday from noon to 6, and will fea- ture a chicken barbecue dinner. Marian presentation slated St. Thomas the Apostle, Irondequoit — Father Alexander Bradshaw will show a video and speak about the reported Marian appari- tions at Medjugorje, Yugoslavia, on Monday, June 6. The 7:30 p.m. event will take place in Parish Notes the school hall. According to reports, Mary has been appear- ing to six teenagers in the remote Yugoslavian village since 1981. The reports include accounts of signs and miracles, and the site has drawn large numbers of pilgrims — including Father Bradshaw — over the years. The presentation is free and open to the pub- lic. Refreshments will be served. 'Sock Hop' benefit scheduled Church of the Assumpuon.Tairport — The parish junior and senior high youth groups will hold a benefit 'Sock Hop' on Friday, June 10, from 7 to 11:30 p.m. in the parish hall. The evening will include 50s music played by a disc jockey, a soda fountain, costume and dance contests, a lip-sync competition and door prizes. Admission will be $2.50 for teenagers, $4 for adults, with a maximum of $10 per family. The price includes munchies. Pizza, pop, floats and baked goods will also be sold. Parish plans 'Sunshine Mass' St Catherine of Siena, Ithaca — In conjunc- tion with the Ithaca Centennial, the parish will celebrate a Sunshine Mass on Sunday, June 5, at 10:30 a.m. The liturgy will take place out- doors on the west side of the parish center, and will be followed by a free continental breakfast. The Mass and brunch are open to all. Sisters Teresa Mary Dolan and Catharine (Gilmary) Dages, both of whom served in the Rochester diocese, have been elected to leader- ship positions in the Mission Helpers of the Sacred Heart. Sister Dolan — director of the religious education program at the Father Leonard A. Kelly School of Religion in Church of die Assumption Parish, Fairport, from 1962 to 1968 — has been named assistant general director of the order's administrative board. Sister Dages, director of catechist formation in the diocese for 1967 to 1969, was elected a board advisor. Their four-year terms begin June 10, 1988. • • • The parish community of Our Lady of Vic- tory/St. Joseph's held a ground-breaking and blessing ceremony for the parish's new com- munity center on Wednesday, April 20. The center, St. Joseph's Hall, will provide room for meetings and study groups. It is scheduled for completion in August. • • • Representative Frank Horton stands with the Seton Junior High School student government officers following ceremonies to dedicate a new flag for Our Lady of Lour- des/Seton Junior High. In a May 16 ceremony on the front steps of Our Lady of Lourdes/Seton Junior High, U.S. Congressman Frank Horton dedicated and presented a new flag to the students of the school. Horton gave a short message to the stu- dent body, then presented the flag to the fol- lowing student government officers: Christine Sibioo, Anne Carney, Qfe Cimkate, and Doro- thy Hendricks. After the officers raised the flag, Horton led the students in a recitation ojF trie-Pledge of Allegiance. -*»-rss?- Students in Nazareth Academy's business department and keyboarding classes raised $431.09 as part of a city-wide Type-a-thon to raise money for leukemia research. The top money earners were: Elizabeth Signurad, $79.83; Carol Voekl, $65; and Nancy Goefler, $20. • • • Sister Elizabeth Er- bland, MM, of Fair- port celebrated her silver jubilee as a Maryknoll Missioner on Friday, May 13, with a Mass and a dinner at the congregation's head- quarters in Ossining, N.Y. Sister Erbland joined the order in 1963, following a teaching career in the Chenango Valley and Fairport schools. She served in the Philippines from 1966 to 1972, worked in the congregation's Of- fice for Mission Projects Funding from 1972 to 1977, and returned to the Rochester diocese to be assistant superintendant for urban-edu- cation until 1982. Currently, she is stationed ' in Ossining as the director of the congregation's development department. As director, she is responsible for the fund-raising, communica- tions and mission education efforts of the Maryknoll Sisters. The United State Achievement Academy has named Aquinas senior Jason Welch as an Unit- ed States National Award winner in science. '.The academy selected Welch, for the honor based on his academic performance, interest and aptitude in science, leadership qualities, responsibility, enthusiasm, motivation to learn and improve,'citizenship, attitude and cooper- ative spirit, dependability, and a recommen- dation from Vilma Goetting, chairwoman of the science department at Aquinas. • • • The Women's Coalition for Downtown has awarded St Mary's Parish the 1988 Beautifi- cation Award in honor of the church's illumi- nated tower.
