Sumner's latest production was a real show stopper, and what better time for him to per- form impressively than at the City-Catholic sectional qualifier for Class AA and A on Saturday, May 21. The McQuaid junior earned first-place finishes in the 400i 800- and 1,600-meter races. Sumner's showing — like all of Saturday's winners — earned him an automatic section- al berth in the Section 5 championships this weekend. The track season will then move on to the state qualifier on June 4 and the state meet on June 11. Sumner finished with impressive times — :49.8 in the 400; 1:59.8 in the 800, and 4:36.7 in the 1,600. McQuaid's 400 relay (:43.9) also recorded one of Class AA's best times for Bob Bradley's Knights. In the high jump, McQuaid's Dan Riley out- distanced all of his competition with a jump of 6-0. Teammate Greg Beale led all discus throwers (123-2) in that field event. Other strong performances for McQuaid were turned in by Justin Berko-Boatang in the long jump (20-8) and Marc Dovi in the 3,200 (10:14.7). - In Class A, Bishop Kearney freshman La- min Massaquoi earned wins in the long jump (19-6 1/2) and 400 run (:50.7). Kearney's Matt McDonald took the pole vault (11-6), while Aq- uinas' Mark Spencer led all competitors in Class A in the high jump (5-10). Kearney's Damien O'Connor finished first in the 3,200 with a time of 10:00.4, while the Kings also won the 1,600 relay (3:33.4). John Sullivan of Kearney finished first in the 800 (2:03.8) as well. Justin Kaleta of Kearney led all runners in the 100 with a time of 11.6. In other Class A competition, AQ's 400 re- lay finished first with a time of :47.9. Brian Keyes of AQ took the 400 intermediate hur- dles (1:01.4). The pentathlon event was won by Kirk Preston of McQuaid, who collected a score of 2,380. Bill Clay of Mooney finished second in that event (2,287). Joe Valentino of Aquinas won the pentathlon among Class A competi- tors by accruing 1,928 points. — Richard A. Kiley Golfing for a good cause The American Cancer Society will hold its 20th-annual Walter Hagen Golf Tournament on Monday, August 1, at the Midvale Coun- try Club in Penfield. The event will host a field of 160 golfers and will be followed by an awards ceremony and dinner. . Call (716)288-1950 for information. Bonnie Trafatet/Couriar-Jourttal Running amid a downpour. Saints still in title hunt; Mooney falls to BK By Richard A. Kiley Someone in Rochester must be trying to fool Mother Nature, because she wreaked havoc last week, cancelling or postponing most of the high school baseball games on the schedule. The weather cooperated long enough for a Catholic high school doubleheader at Silver Stadium on Sunday, May 22. In the second game, Vince Falbo and Lou Ledilia came through with key hits in a two-run third inning, as Art Carlisi's Kings nipped Cardinal Mooney, 5-3. Falbo doubled in one run, and Ledilia plat- ed another with a single of his own to propel the Kings (8-3,11-5). Junior pitcher Rich Davi- son allowed seven hits and struck out four bat- ters to gain the victory. Ed Nietopski's Cards (10-2, 12-2) had jumped on Davison for two runs early, but Kearney junior R.D. Long drove in two runs of his own with a second-inning double to tie the City-Catholic League game. \Things are really tight right now? said Nietopski, whose Cards close out the regular season with: games against Franklin, Edison, Greece Athena and Hornell. \I think it's vir- tually a tie (for the league title) right now!' In the first game — which doubled as a marathon — Steve Schott singled home two runs in the ninth inning as McQuaid (6-4,12-6) knocked off Aquinas (7-2,16-5), 4-2. Schott collected three hits in all for Tim Jordan's Knights. Byron Schneider, who pitched four solid in- nings of two-hit relief, got the win for McQuaid, improving his record to 6-1. In other league action from last week, Kear- ney defeated host East, 14-3 on Wednesday, May 18. Brian Reed smashed a grand slam in the first inning to set the tone for the game. Long ad- ded two hits and two RBIs for Kearney. Paul Viola and Andy Conner each collected two hits and an RBI for the Kings. McQuaid's Schneider had a no-hitter until the sixth inning, as the Knights defeated visit- ing Mooney 8-5 on Tuesday, May 17. Dave Nientemp went 3-for-4 to raise his streak to 9-for-10 over the last three games and balloon his batting average to an amazing .548. The Knights began the week on Monday, May 16, with a forfeit-win over East. Frank Payne's young DeSales team finds it- self in a virtual tie for first place in the Finger Lakes West Division after falling to Naples, 13-2, in the lone game for the Saints last Mon- day, May 16. The Big Green roughed up Frank Payne Jr. for seven runs before the DeSales coach took the freshman pitcher out of the game. DeSales (7-3) has a league game in hand in both Honeoye (6-3) and Naples (6-3). The Saints were to pitch Jim Vedora against Honeoye on Monday, May 23.
