Benefit card party scheduled Sacred Heart Cathedral, Rochester — The Rosary Guild will hold a card party to benefit the parish school and the School of the Holy Childhood on Saturday, April 16, at 8 p.m. in the school hall. For information, call Donna Warner at (716)458-3529. j Parish Notes Parish sponsors dinner/dance St Joseph, Penfield — The parish life com- mittee is sponsoring a dinner/dance to benefit the Ronald McDonald House of Rochester on Saturday, April 16, at the Ukrainian Home on Empire Boulevard. The cocktail hour will begin at 6:30 p.m., with the buffet dinner to follow at 7:30. Mus- ic for the dance will be supplied by the Vic Pla- ta Orchestra. The Ronald McDonald House is a tem- porary lodging facility for families whose chil- dren are hospitalized for serious illnesses. Families using the house pay a nominal fee of $10 per night if they can afford it. These revenues pay for a part of the cost of continu- ing house operations. The Rochester house is currently being built on Westmoreland Drive. Tickets for St. Joseph's dinner are $15 per person, or $30 per couple. Reservations are due by April 11. Annual men's retreat on tap Immaculate Conception, Ithaca — The par- ish's annual men's retreat is scheduled for April 15-17 at the Canandaigua retreat house. Nine diocesan high school students received awards at the annual Scholastic Art Exhibit held in February at Sibley's downtown store. First-place winners were Jeff O'Shea, Jim HubbeD and Heather Dry from Cardinal Mooney; Thomas Schcfl and Victoria Howard from Aquinas; Lisa Berrittella from Mercy; and Jennifer DeLucas from Nazareth Academy. Second-place winners were Cardinal Mooney's Sheryl Wisotzke and frank Marino; Nazareth's Lisa Rizzo; McQuaid's Christopher Hanna and Charles Sadler; and Mercy's Julie Canero and Jennifer Baxter. The first-place winners have submitted their art work for the national competition, current- ly underway in New York City. Judith Ann Kollar, director of the diocesan continuing education office, has been elected to the board of directors of the National Or- ganization for Continuing Education for Ro- man Catholic Clergy. Kollar, the first woman elected to such a position, will represent New York state. Dena Alberti, a fifth-grader at St Theo- dore's School won first-place in the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry contest. She received a certificate and $20 in ceremonies February 29 at the Eastman Dental Center. Highland Dental Group has announced that Dr. Patrick J. Welsh, DDS, has joined the prac- tice. Dr. Welsh is a 1974 graduate of McQuaid Jesuit High School. He has been in private practice in Buffalo for the last five years. Brian Edward Jef fen, a seminarian of the Diocese of Rochester, was instituted in the ministry of acolyte on February 5 by Bishop Daniel F. Walsh of Reno-Las Vegas, Nevada. Jeffers is a second year student at The Ameri- can College of Louvain in Belgium. Four students at St Charles Borromeo School won awards in the National Quality Month Essay Contest Patrick Doran won first place, receiving a certificate and $50. Matthew Fhwgan and JM MBIer both won second places, earning certificates and $30. Colleen Flavin received $10 and a certificate for win- ning honorable mention. The first- and second- place winners received their awards March 16 during a dinner for local members of the Qual- ity in America Association. Neighbors Hie St Anthony Society of St. Francis De- Sales Parish, Geneva, installed its new officers in ceremies.Wednesday, March 2. The newly elected officers are: Rose Ventura, president; Esther D'Amico, vice president; Loretta Chiarilli, treasurer; Elizabeth Swartzman, secretary; and Philomena Benedetti, financial secretary. Bishop Clark was at the parish to celebrate Mass and to partteipatein the ground breaking for the new parish center. On Monday, March 14, Dr. James Terzian, a pathologist and director of the blood bank at St Joseph's Hospital, Elmiia, received the hospital's 1988 Oppy Award. The annual award is given to a person associated with the hospi- tal \who best exemplifies extraordinary caring and concern for those served by the hospital!' At the same ceremony; Marguerite Geaatos received the James E; Swartwood Award. This award, consisting of 5500, is given to a person chosen by lot from all Oppy winners, past and present.
