The theme for the series is \Lent: A Time of Journey, A Time of Growth!' Two sessions — at 9 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. — will be held on Monday, Tuesday and Wednes- day. On Thursday and Friday, only the even- ing session will take place. All sessions wiU begin with Mass in the church. New Jersey priest to visit Immaculate Conception, Ithaca -<- Father Carl Marucci of St. Teresa's Church in Runne- mede, N.J., will conduct a retreat at the par- ish from March 6-10. Father Marucci will speak at all the Masses on the weekend of March 5-6 and will give retreat talks each day of the retreat at 11 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. Topics for the retreat talks are: Sunday, \The Secret of Happiness: What Is Real Peace?\ Monday, \An Incredible Intimacy: The Love of the Father;\ Tuesday, \A Reckless Love: The Selfless Gift of the Cross;\ Wednesday, \The Power To Heal: The Impossible Made Possi- ble;\ and Thursday, \And the Gift Goes On: A Celebration of Eucharist.\ All are welcome to attend. Series looks at lay roles St. Thomas More, Rochester — \An Evolv- ing Church — The Call of the Laity\ will be the subject of a four-part lecture series to be presented by Father Robert Collins, pastor. The sessions will take place in the school Music Room beginning March 7, and continuing the next three Sundays of March from 7:30-9 p.m. The series is free and open to the public. Father Curran to preach Cayuga Team Ministry — Father Charles E. Curran, who is teaching this year at Cornell University in Ithaca, will preach at all four of the team ministry's weekend Masses March 5 and 6. In addition, Father Curran will celebrate the 5 p.m. Mass on Saturday and the 10:30 a.m. Mass on Sunday. Following the 10:30 a.m. Mass, a coffee hour and reception will take place in the rectory. Father William Spilly, pas- tor, has invited all area parishioners to attend these Masses. Father Callan leading retreat St. Mary, Canandaigua — The parish's an- nual retreat will take place the week of March 6-11, every evening at 7:30 p.m. in the church. Moderator for the retreat will be Father James E Callan, pastor of Corpus Christi Church in Rochester. A highlight of the retreat will be a poor man's supper on Wednesday, March 9, from 5:30-6:30 p.m. in the school gym. At the con- clusion of the retreat's last session on Friday, March 11, a coffee hour will take place in the church hall. Parish Notes Isaiah 43 mission scheduled St. Theodore's Church, Gates — \Because I Love You\ is the theme of the Isaiah 43 mis- sion/retreat being offered to all members of the community. The goal of the retreat is twofold: 1) to promote personal growth and spiritual renewal, and 2) to reach out to the alienated and unchurched members of the community. A team of Catholic evangelists will offer a four-day mission beginning March 14 and con- cluding March 17. All events will begin at 7:30 p.m. and end at 9 p.m., followed by a social hour. The presentation on Sunday, March 13, is for teenagers only. All presentations will be sign interpreted for the hearing impaired, and the church is accessible to the handicapped. Transportation can be arranged through the parish. The mission team is composed of Sister Jean Patrice Marr of the St. Elizabeth Ann Se- ton Sisters of Charity, Isaiah 43 coordinator of evangelization and a. retreat leader in Wilkinsburg, Pa. and Father Lester Bach, OFM, popular retreat master and full-time preacher for the Isaiah 43 Parish Missions. The empha- sis of the mission at St. Theodore's is to invite everyone who is seeking a deeper meaning in their lives to discover or rediscover a personal, living faith. A unique feature of this mission is that it is designed to continue after the mission team leaves the parish. An intense introduction to evangelization program will be offered Satur- day and Sunday, March 19 and 20, following the retreat. Hours for this program are 9 a.mr 4 p.m. Saturday and 1-4 p.m. Sunday. School registration opens St. John of Rochester, Fairport — The par- ish school is now accepting registration for fall 1988 classes in kindergarten through grade eight. New students must register by March 4 so that appropriate transportation requests can be filed. To register children, parents must visit the school, located off Route 31 at Ayrault Road, between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Birth certificates are required to register children for kindergar- ten. Organ concert slated St. Patrick's, Seneca Falls — The parish has invited the public to attend an organ perfor- mance by Cj Sambach on Sunday, March 6, at 3 p.m. In addition to the concert, Sambach will also present an educational program for the school- children at 12:30 and 1 p.m. These presenta- tions are also open to the public. The Kids on the Block, an interactive pup- pet troupe, will give a presentation on handi- cap awareness to third graders at Mother of Sorrows School in March. The troupe already gave a presentation on teen pregnancy to the school's sixth-grade class, one on drug abuse to the fifth-grade class, and one on child abuse to the fourth-grade class. • • • Matthew Bovenzi, a fifth-grade student at St. Theodore's School, was a runner-up in the United Cerebral Palsy Telethon essay contest. Bovenzi's essay about the Constitution and the rights of the disabled was submitted to the con- test after it was chosen as the best essay at St. Theodore's. • • • Sister Mary Edwardine Weaver, RSM, will be included in the 1987-88 edition of Who's Who in American, Education, for significant contributions to American education. The former superintendent of schools in the Diocese of Rochester, Sister Weaver is a super- visor of student teachers at Nazareth College, an educational consultant for MacMiUan and Co., and coordinator for a joint Diocese of Rochester/University of Rochester graduate program for Catholic school administrators. In addition, Sister Weaver is scheduled.to speak, about staff development at the Nation- al Catholic Education Association conference to be held in New, 'York in April. Neighbors Students from 19 schools competed in the Sixth Annual Invitational Spelling Bee held at St. Boniface School Monday, Feb. 1. Melissa Malick of Our Lady of Perpetual Help won first place, whjle Martin Romeo of St. John the Evangelist School, Humboldt St., took sec- ond place.
