Well, you can be sure of one thing—they use this cash for a constructive purpose, not for personal enjoy- ment. In fact we are constantly impressed by the selfless devo- tion of so many groups which, over the years, have worked tirelessly for the benefit of others. For example, our top POP winner in the last two Games— St. Ambrose Rosary Society — turned over all its earnings to the sisters at the school. They in turn applied these funds. toward the expense of having the convent chapel redecorated, installing a new altar, and even purchasing new habits. A group at St. Michael's, Rochester, under the dedicated chairmanship of Mrs. William Mahar, was able to purchase a large dictionary stand and other equipment for the school library. At St. Lawrence Church in Greece, the Sunday School group made up of pre-school youngsters directed by Mrs. James Curtis, came out 12th in the last POP Game. One might think that such young children would expect to \enjoy\ their POP a\yard. On the contrary, they too used their winnings to benefit the school by buying a projector, craft materials and other needed items. When the POP program started here—in the fall of 1966— one of the very first groups to register was the Holy Rosary Mission Group headed by long-time worker, Mrs. Neal MeGln- ness. This small but extremely diligent band of women has been organized as a separate unit for over 20 years. (Before that it was associated with the Catholic War Veterans at Holy Rosary.) Today there are approximately 15 active members, eight of whom were with the original group. Every month of the year, these women prepare and send out boxes of material. For example, cancelled postage stamps go to a seminary, religious articles to missions in Kentucky and Jamaica and Mass stipends to a mission in Texas, eyeglasses to a Lions Club, bandages, haspital gowns, etc. to the Catholic- Medical Mission Board. In addition, used clothing and house- hold articles are given- out locally.. In fact, anything which could be of possible value to others is searched out and collected If members use \ccnts-off\ or \refund\ coupons on grocery store items, these saving are turned over to the group. For them, the accumulating of POP proofs of purchase is really doing what comes naturally. Their POP profits have been used to pay for their large mailing expenses. It Is POP groups like this—and we know there are many others throughout the community—who really deserve a \Bravo •Well Done!\ Do let us know if your group has an interesting history or uses its POP earnings for an unusual purpose. Through this column, you can inform others of your worthwhile work and perhaps be an inspiration to them. o o o If you're one of those unfortunates who hasn't yet boarded the POP Brandwagon, then it's time you investigated the advantages. Just call Mrs. Ennis, today, at (he COURIER: 454- 7050, or if you prefer, fill out the coupon below and mail it to THE COURIER JOURNAL, 35 SCIO ST., ROCHESTER, 14604. There was such a demand for the Natural Science Field Trips that another section for grades five through nine has been added.
