September 22, 1989 Vol. XXV No. 2 Published by the Students of Jefferson Community College • Outer Coffeen Street • Watertown, New York 13601 HELP! WHAT'S THE NAME OF THIS NEWSPAPER? BY K. LEONARD No, the staff of the newspa- per hasn't FORGOTTEN the paper's name, although we'd like to! After years and years of using the name THE WORD, it has come to our attention that a more appropriate, up-to-date nameisinorder. Inotherwords, we think the present name stinks and we want to get rid of it. And since we write for the paper, we can do that. (It's great to have authority, isn't it!) We could go ahead on our \I'M HAPPY TO BE BY STEVE NUNEMAKER There are several new members on the teaching staff at JCC this year. While one person may be new as a teacher to JCC, JCC is certainly not new to her. She has been here before as a student. Linda Dening, who is presently teaching accounting here at JCC, graduated from this very college in 1986. Having earned an Associate of Science degree, she trans- ferred to Clarkson University. There, in 1988, she earned a bachelor's degree in account- ing. Later, in the spring of 1989, she earned a Master's degree in business administra- tion. Now, Linda Dening has returned to JCC to teach. \Why?\ one might ask. \Surely there are plenty of high-level business jobs open for someone with a M.B.A.!\ Linda had several reasons for returning here to teach. First, she had gotten a little experience teaching when she taught part-time at JCC.in the summer of 1988. Second, she had a taste of both the academic world and of the business world, and of the two, she felt she liked the academic world better. Finally, she returned because she really appreciated the educational environment here at JCC. When Linda was a student at JCC she noticed that the professors were own and change the name all by ourselves, since we do write for the paper. We could put in some name no one has ever heard of before and never say anything about it. But that would be boring. That would be deny- ing your rights as free-thinking students. (It also would leave a blank space right here that we might not be able to fill.) So we're asking for your help in coming up with a new name. I guess you could call it a contest, although we really don' t have any rules and we're not BACK!\ always willing to help their students individually with any questions they might have. She pointed out that the big difference between a two- year college and a four-year college is the learning atmosphere. She felt that the atmosphere at JCC is very open and friendly compared to most 4-year schools. For example, she felt that special attention like this makes the environment at JCC very conducive to learning. Most of all, Linda said that she came to JCC to teach because she likes the contact with the students. She has an ability to identify well with them. In addition to teaching at JCC, Linda Dening also runs a small tax preparation and bookkeeping business. She also helps her husband on a dairy farm that they own in Lowville. And as if all that weren't enough, Linda plans to continue her graduate education. She is also working towards becoming a certified public accountant, and has already passed two parts of the C.P.A. examina- tion. So far, Linda Dening is fitting in well at JCC. She said that the students here are very friendly, and the faculty and administrative staff have been very helpful. Basically, Linda Dening sums up her feelings toward JCC in her own words: \I'm happy to be back!\ sure what else you'll win be- sides our eternal gratitude and the priv ilege of seeing your very own creation adorn the mast- head of the paper. But in the next month or so, we might be able to scrape some kind of prize together for the lucky winner. Call us disorganized, but won't it be kind of a challenge and a surprise to think about the pos- sibilities for the winner, which couldbeyou! Iknow, it'tjusta cheap excuse to get you think- ing about a new name—which is fine if it works! Trying to leave the campus during one of the busy hours in nothing less than an exercise in patience. Cars line up one after the other, waiting their turn to negotiate the obstacle course on Coffeen St. While exact dates are impos- sible to predict, we can expect to continue this ritual until late October. That is when the Watertown City Engineering Office hopes to have construc- tion completed. Construction began in early July to improve the intersection of Coffeen St. and the college drive. It probably would have been much more convenient if work had been started earlier to end the con- struction before the start of the fall session. However, money is the one necessary ingredient required in most endeavors. Before work could begin, there had to be a supply of resources made available, and time was spent deciding how to use the funds. The City of Watertown is providing the money required for materials as well as providing man- power and equipment. JCC is neither contributing funds nor is it playing a part in the management of the construc- tion. The city is, however, keeping JCC administration informed as to what is being done. In the past, the college drive joined Coffeen St. at a right angle, with a stop sign confronting motorists tying to enter Coffeen St. (the street itself had no artificial traffic delay). As a result, during hours of heavy traffic, it was difficult for vehicles on Coffeen coming from Route So here's what you gotta do. Scribble down your own name, and a newspaper name that has something to do with JCC, the campus, college life, and the news. Is it getting difficult yet? If you're still with me, take your choice (or choices, if you're feeling creative) to the WORD, oops, I mean Newspaper drop box in the student resource center in the College Center building. If you can't find it, please ask. It's somewhere around there and someone can help you find it. 81, to turn left into the campus. Likewise, it was also difficult for cars leaving campus to turn on to Coffeen (especially when making a left turn on to Coffeen). However, the end product of the work being done should dramatically improve traffic flow. The path from campus to Coffeen will fork before coming to that street. Traffic coming into campus will enter at the same place and follow the same route as before. Vehicles leaving campus will follow hte right line of the fork to a semi-new intersec- tion. This intersection will be regulated by traffic lights. A right turn will take the driver toward Route 81, cars turning left will follow Coffen toward downtown. Crossing thorugh the intersection will put cars on to Gaffney Drive, which It might turn out that no one will contribute to our little con- test and we'll have absolutely nothing to go on. But I'm hop- ing that JCC students have more school spirit than that! Yet you can also think of it this way: without your help, wemightput together a name that's worse than THE WORD! It seems like a rather remote chance, but you never know. You could also win something really great that you've always wanted, even though we haven't figured what that is yet. Finally, you may get e to see your \stroke of genius\ as the title and you can brag about y it and we'll put your name in the i- paper and people will think a lot e of you for being so original, u What a wonderful contribution ': you'll be making! it Hopefully, after reading this e plea, you'11 realize that we need s all the help we can get. So drop it offyournameandthenameyou d want for the paper at our box in it the College Center building. It's n fun! It's free! It's easy! And, it you won't have to rely on us to st think up a name ourselves. be back to normal (and will hopefully be better) at the end of October.
