Shampine SPORTS EDITOR The Jefferson Community Col- lege Cannoneers ended a disap- pointing season with three con- secutive victories in six days. The final game was an impressive victory against Johnson City Bap- tist seminary. The Potsdam State Freshmen were the guests on February 14, and were defeated in a late-start- ing game 88 to 70. The two teams competed earlier this season, the Cannoneers finishing on top with a 83 to 66 score. Willie McBurnett had a fine evening, scoring 25 points and shooting for 52% from the field. The Cannoneers braved the weather on February 17 when they traveled to Utica to take on Mo- hawk Valley Community College. In the Christmas Tournament D. Rene Valentine's crew stopped Mohawk 72 to 62 to win the con- solation game. But Mohawk had defeated Empire State Confer- ence champions Niagara Com- munity College only a few days before the Utica game. The Can- noneers went in expecting a close game and left with a persuasive 93 to 74 victory. Dan O'Donnell was high scorer with 24 points. McBurnett, John Clendenin,Whit- ney Lewis, and Bill Adams all scored in double figures. Lewis chipped in with 16 rebounds. The final game of the season was played on February 19 when the Johnson City Baptist Semin- ary hoopsters journeyed to Watertown. The Cannoneers won the game 77 to 58. High scorer for the Cannoneers was Dan O'Donnell with 30 points. The top rebounder was Whitney Lewis who grabbed 14 off the boards. In an earlier meeting, the Can- noneers won 84 to 67. The 1967-68 basketball season saw only a few bright spots for the Cannoneers, who finished with three victories and ten defeats in the Empire State Basketball Con- ference. Two of these victories were major upsets. The Cannon- eers found the well-publicized Erie Tech \Kats\ easy prey, giving them a 101 to 62 setback. When the Cannoneers took on Paul Smiths a second time, they edged the \Bobcats\ 92 to 90. In the first contest, Paul Smiths had it easy, overwhelming the Cran- berry and White 95 to 79. The Cannoneers had two rugged games with their local rivals, Canton ATC. Canton won in Watertown on December 13 by a score of 77 to 71. The return match on February 8 saw the Can- noneers go down to another de- feat, 95 to 93. Willie McBurnett found the hoop for 33 points in the losing effort. SPORTS Liberal Arts Teams Lead In Intramurals Final Season Tally The Liberal Arts 'A' team, top scorers in bowling with 56 points, continued their succes by win- ning five of six basketball games.
