Page 8 THE WORD December 20, 1967 Chaplain's Corner What Seek You From The Professor?' By Rev. James K. Morrison LITTLE MAN ON CAMPUS V«*^ Rev. James K. Morrison I know it's none of my business! I know I perhaps ought to shut my mouth! But I can't resist the temptation to take the pulpit regarding my ideas on what the purpose of an education at J.C.C. should be. I do not presume to sit in judge- ment on any of the professors. I only wish to rather precariously stick my foot in an area where even angels fear to tread at times! In my estimation we have to expect that Jefferson Community College cannot be run as a four year college or university. Let's face facts! Although we have much untapped talent at J.C.C, it seems evident that the majority of our more intellectually talent- ed high school students chose to attend a four year college or university, for one reason or another. This leaves J.C.C. with many students, who are.not used to being leaders'since in high school most of the ones who did the leading were the ones who got scholarships to large four year colleges and universities. At the beginning of each aca- demic year there is a rush for the leaders on campus. Because so few show much evidence of leadership qualities, there are not many of these individuals to go around and thus some clubs suffer from having gotten there too late and perhaps with too little by way of natural induce- ment. So, if my hypothesis is true that J.C.C. would be composed of a small percentage of youth naturally talented and endowed with leadership qualities, then it would seem to me the primary task of each professor would be to instill in as many students as possible the \insight of larger dimension\. What in the world do I mean by this? I mean that if a professor can instill in even twenty-percent of his class a Protect Your Home, Boat & Car With a Good Fyr-Fyter Fire Extinguisher All Sizes & Types Ideal for Xmas Gifts CHAS. HAYES Fire Equip. 12 Brainard St. Watertown, N. Y. desire to expand his knowledge, to be creative, to think big, to search for the unique, the true and the beautiful in life without ever having his zest for life or zeal for learning dry up; then that professor has done a fan- tastic job. When I entered college after high school, I would, in looking back, categorize myself as the \community college type\. I startled no one by my talent (what an understatement!) and showed practically no leadership qualities. I was a follower and unaccustomed to doing any leading. But in college I met a professor who helped me to develop an unbelievable desire to learn. In high school I had read the grand total of one single book! Suddenly in college I was reading hundreds of books a year! In high school all that interested me was beer, girls and athletics. In college I practically swung to the other extreme of becoming a book-worm! Why? Simply because one man opened up my mind and I have fortunately never allowed it to be closed again. My hunger for knowledge in- creases by the year. I never had much of a memory, never impressed people with my grades, but I have always, since I met this professor, found that I could come up with new ideas, sometimes even creative ideas. The credit is not mine. It goes to my professor. And so, if those who teach at J.C.C. should agree with my opinion, I would urge them not to Place undue emphasis on the facts and bits of information which must be taught. These are necessary, although some day we might have our own pocket computer to give us such facts without burdening our minds with such things. But where you can help the student at J.C.C., where you can mold and change him, is in the area of creativity. Al- though I am sure all of you are aware of this, I think more em- phasis could be placed on the development of students who are creative, able to come up with the new and unique; students who in the future will not be re- placed in their positions by com- puters, for computers can never replace \idea men\. Iknowyour task is a difficult one; hopefully my empathy for your task is at the right level.
