December 20, 1967 THE WORD Page 7 Introducing the Cannoneers 6irls Bowli \9 Undwwa Y Part III % Whitney Lewis By David Shampine, Sports Editor WHITNEY LEWIS, upper left is the other Cannoneer co-cam- tain. \Whit\ come to Jefferson Community College after playing at Thomas Jefferson High School. This Brooklyn team, coached by Sam Beckman, won 12 of 19 games. The 6 foot 2 inch, 190 pound Lewis is majoring in Business Administration. Used mostly as a guard by Coach Valentine, Whitney was second in team scoring after the first two Cannoneer games. Hav- ing scored on 16 field goals and three foul shots, his 35 total points were narrowly topped by Dan o'Donnell. Lewis' 20 re- bounds lead the team in that department, and his 72 minutes of playing time made him the busiest of the Cannoneers. BILL ADAMS, center, seems to be Valentine's \sixth man.\ Bill has been used as a relief man for both Joe Baytos and Dan O'Donnell. The 6 foot 2 inch, 175 pound guard from Syracuse scored 12 points in the first two games, and showed signs\ of ; Wing an effective re*-\** bounder. Adams should be a big man on the team, as his team spirit, hustle, and skill are essential to a winning team. Bill played at West Genesee High School last season. He contributed to the school's 11 and 4 record with an average of 16 points per game. He was honored as'a member pt the Herald American All-star team and the Post Standard All- Ilnfrainurals On Campus With three intramural events completed, two Liberal Arts teams monopolized in team scor- ing. The high team was the Freshman 'C' team, who grossed 156 points. The Senior <B' team fellowedya distant second with 128 points. Right on their heels with 123 points was the Liberal Arts Senior «A' team. These scores were compiled after the completion of Cross Country meets, which were run here on the campus. The winner of the event was Paul Sumner, who represented the Liberal Arts Freshman 'B' team. Finishing second, third, and fourth were Dan zehr (Engineering Science Freshman), George Montondo (LA Senior 'A', and Bob Fox (LA Senior 'B'), respectively. Competition in bowling is now being carried on, with singles, doubles, and team events. INTRAMURAL STANDINGS L.A. Freshman 'C 156 points L.A. Senior 'B' 128 points L.A. Senior «A' 123 points Eng. SAM JONES, upper right, of Black River is another forward on Valentine's squad, and will be used as a helper for John Clendenin and Joe Baytos. Sam did not see much action in the first two games, only nine minutes in all. But being a fine defensive player, and because Sam Jones Baytos has been having foul trouble (he had ten fouls in the two games), \Sandy\ could be- come a regular. He is a strong rebounder and can be an effective scorer. The 6 foot 4 inch, 180 pound athlete played his high school basketball at Carthage Central School.
