FREE - TAKE ONE! PLEASE RECYCLE! isc JCC STUDENT NEWSPAPER \Out of the Past, Shooting for the Future' VOLUME 28 ISSUE NO. STUDENT RESOURCE FEE RAISED; $48 TO $85 by Brian Becker CANNON STAFF WRITER An increase in the student resource fee for the spring was approved in a special Student Government Association (SGA) full-senate meeting on November 19th. This increase is to cover the mistakes in budgets as THE CANNON reported on in the October issue. As a result, the full-time student resource fee for the spring will be $85, up from the $48 charge in the fall. The part-time student resource fee was set at a $25 flat fee, change from the $4 per credit hour this fall. These raises in the student resource fee were approved in order to avoid cuts in athletics, SGA and Social Cultural Committee (SCC) programs. SGA was faced with the choice of setting a fee high enough to cover the mistakes from the fall or shaving $54,936 from SGA, SCC and Athletic Board of Control (ABC). Rebecca Small-Kellogg, Director of Student Activities, submitted example cuts totalling only $20,000. The cuts included; $8,296 from ABC which would have eliminated baseball and lacrosse, $8,296 from SCC which would cancel all tournaments, the Semi-Annual Club Volleyball Challenge, Spring Fest, two comedians, and Spirit Week. Also, $8,296 would be cut from SGA by eliminating the annual SGA Awards Banquet, the spring leadership conference, and one-eigth of all student media budgets, including yearbook and the student newspaper. By charging the increase in the spring, these budgets will revert back to their original status and the proposed cuts would not take place. The increase in the student resource fee for the spring is to make up for what was not charged in the fall and is not an actual increase for the 1992-1993 academic year. THE CANNON, with \Traitor to the Cause\ written about Mr. Seklecki and other evidence found during JCC student's crime scence Investigations. JCC STUDENTS INVESTIGATE CULT RAPE CASE JAY ADAMS IN THE by Gidget Rafus CANNON STAFF WRITER The beginning of a path that has never been traveled before. For Jay Adams, JCC's newest Cannoneer, the untravelled path to college basketball is ride he won't ever forget. Fresh from Watertown High School this freshman has managed to succeed in playing basketball with the big boys. With his smooth passes and captivating jump shots he has definately come along way from high school. \I've been in sports probably as soon as I could walk. My father is the head coach at Watertown High School. I've played football, basketball and baseball throughout high school. I was involved in sports all of my life,\ stated Adams. During the beginning of a new season many athletes may begin to feel the pressure to succeed, for Adams even though he has found that there is a big transition from playing basketball in high school to college he believes that doing his best is all that matters. With the support of his family he finds A DIAMOND ROUGH performing on the courts enjoyable without any pressures. \In high school you can slide by with your grades, you'll get a second chance, but in college you to have a certain grade point average. I have a great amount of support from my family. They come to all my games. I can't remember a time when at least one of my parents wasn't there,\stated Adams. Working with the 1992-93 Men Cannoneers has been an experience that Adams has taken to his advantage,\ Working with the team I have learned a lot about teamwork. When I played in High School I carried the team, now if I don't understand something I can go to one of my teammates and they'll explain it to me. We all work together.\ Adams is starting off the new season with a new basketball team, when asked what we can expect from his performance the court he gave this reply,\ I hope the crowd will see something really exciting. A good pass or a good play or something exciting Well, the excitement first starts with you so come out and support the 1992-93 Men Cannoneers. Come witness the beginning of Jay Adams' college basketball career. by Julie Beach CANNON STAFF WRITER THIERRY CONTY DUNKING IT THE RIGHT WAY The Investigations #1 students of Rick Seklecki found out, on November 12th, that crime scene investigations are not as easy as they look on television! Students spent two hours combing a cult-kidnapping, rape/attempted murder crime scene scenerio room at Stone Row Inn, Madison Barracks in Sacketts Harbor. The classes were divided into teams of four or five students. Each team entered the assigned room with only the knowledge of the alledged victim's complaint. Each team recovered fingerprints and other physical evidence., drew scale sketches of the area, and photographed everything. When they were finished, they collated all of their finding into a detailed investigation report. Students found evidence such as hair, bullets, blood stains, paraphanalia and drugs which were simulated by Mr. Seklecki with with items from his kitchen. \You should know that there are three suspects and you should have found three different types of ammunition at the scene so your reports should reflect that we are looking for three armed and dangerous suspects.\ Mr. Seklecki stated to his class after collecting the students final reports.,\For those of you taking Investigations #2 in the spring, we will be doing more of these scenarios with added aspects such as surveilence . .. we will be using real suspects next time.\ by Gidget Rafus CANNON STAFF WRITER A year ago, Thierry Conty walked the campus of JCC in the hopes of continuing his education. Little did he know that he would embark on an outstanding basketball career. Last season Conty contributed a lot to the Cannoneers-this year season he's even more determined to put the Men's 1992-93 basketball team over the top. \I want to get my team mates involved. I don't want to take the game. I want people to look at me as a major factor, not just as someone making a lot of points, but as a major factor by holding the team together,\ commented Conty. Growing up in New York City and cominj from a large family, Conty revealed that he wa motivated to play basketball from his olde brother and his father. \I wanted to play football, but my dad told mi that I was too skinny. I watched this guy breal his leg playing football. Then I decided to pla; basketball. My older brother played fo Sulliven Community College during the firs half of the season he failedsome courses so, h didn't play in the second half of the season That motivated me to play. This season 6'4' Conty feels very confider about his coach, his teammates, and most of a about himself. \Most coaches push you to ge better, but Coach Williams leaves a gap fror CONTINUED PAGE 3
