PAGE 12 OCTOBER 1992 MEN'S BASKETBALL TEAM: JUMPING INTO A NEW SEASON by Gidget Rafus CANNON STAFF WRITER The excitement started on September 29, 1992 as Coach Robert Williams participated in one of Jefferson Community College's most awaited sports event - the 1992-93 basketball try-outs. Students near and far, from returning students to incoming freshmen, came prepared to battle for a position on JCC's upcoming Men's basketball team. \They will be playing in a up- tempo type of game. They are able to get the ball up and down the courts very quickly,\ commented Coach Williams as he reviews the performance of the new team during try-outs. The one thing Coach Williams stated that the new team has to work on is their rebounding skills, \They need to realize that in order to win the game they need to get the ball from the back court.\ \ Last year we did well with what we had. I think that one thing that we needed to improve on was our shooting selection. The shoot selection wasn't what I hoped it to be,\ replies Coach Williams as he reflects on last season's performance. \ This is something that we will work on this year. We have players that can score, but we must make sure they can score from any angle.\ Though last year's team had a satisfying performance, this year Coach Williams and his player are going to captivate the audience with their dynamic defense line, and their fast shooting techniques. With returning players Jim Barker, Thierry Conty, and Ed McWayne this should be a promising year for the men Cannoneers indeed. \The returning players can contribute leadership. It is important to have returning players who can carry over the next year. The freshmen don't know how to play like the past players. They will be able to guide them through the practices and the games,\ commented Coach Williams. Being JCC's head coach for the past 25 years has been experience that Coach Williams takes very seriously. When asked what motivated him to be a coach he gave us this reply, \I had the opportunity to work for some really good coaches in high school and in college. They impressed me, I hope I can help other people who what to play. I learned my style of coaching COUNTINUED PAGE 9 THE CANNON SPORTS PAGE •iiMMMi^ai^^MHMMMMMHMilii JCC's Womens Player of the Month, Julie Ellis, #14, burst through Canton's Wendi Sheley, #19, (right) and Becky Lee ,#24 (left). JCC PLAYERS OF THE MONTH JULIE ELLIS by Mark Rounds CANNON STAFF WRITER The first woman to recieve The Cannon's Athlete of the Month honors is Women's Soccer standout, Julie Ellis. Julie was chosen by Coach Hicks, Women's Soccer coach, for her hard work during the first eight games of the season. Julie has been a major factor in the Lady Cannoneers 5-3 start which ranks the Cannoneers seventh out of 20 teams in Region in. Julie has scored four goals and tallied three assists while taking a total of 40 shots, an average of five per game. Julie scored two goals in a game against Paul Smith's College and also scored twice in a game with Clinton Community College. Congratulations to Julie and her teammates from the staff of The Cannon and good luck in the remaining games. JIM PINKERTON by Gidget Rafus CANNON STAFF WRITER A dedicated husband and father, Pinkerton has spent the past two years representing Jefferson Community College by becoming a soccer player for the Cannoneers. Studying under a three year nursing program, Pinkerton has managed to score two goals in each game while assisting in one as he played in the stopper defense position. \Last year there were a lot of leaders, and Jim sort of waited around, this year he is definitely a leader\ commented Coach McClements. \He is more consistent in all phases of the game. He is improving almost daily. He is a leader with the other new players. His leadership is through vocal motivation and through his playing.\ Congratulations to Jim Pinkerton for being Jefferson Community College's Player of the Month. Make sure you check next month's sports page to see who will be selected next. MAGIC JOHNSON THE LEGEND RETURNS TO THE COURTS by Gidget Rafus CANNON STAFF WRITER On November 7, 1991 the world of sports mourned as NBA superstar Earvin \Magic\ Johnson retired from the courts in the hopes of restoring his strength to battle against one of America's most deadliest diseases-A.I.D.S. Now after a season retirement, Magic Johnson is coming back to the courts, and hopefully as powerful as ever. Early this month the Los Angeles Lakers signed Magic to a year contract extension that will reportly pay him $1.5 million this season, and $14.6 next season. With the average NBA salary being about $1 million a year, this proves to be the largest one-year salary in a team sport. For those who witnessed Magic's performance during the NBA All-Star Game in February, where we won MVP honors, and the Summer Olympics where he led the Dream Team to the gold, it's quite obvious that this athlete was born to play basketball. Though Johnson has renewed his contract with the Lakers, he will have a reduced game schedule. He will play 60 games out of a 82 regular game season. Magic will avoid playing back-to-back games, but will play against Chicago, Boston, and New York. JCC's Ryan Derouin and NCC's David Palmer battle for the soccer ball!
