THE CyWJSON OCTOBER 1992 PAGE 11 \i SPORTS CONTINUED TOE TO TOE: TORONTO AND THE BRAVES FACE OFF by Mark Rounds CANNON STAFF WRITER Once again the moment baseball fans have waited for is here. Yes, it's time for the World Series, an event for which baseball addicts endure 162 regular season games. The 89th World Series will be played between the Atlanta Braves and the Tbronto Blue Jays. The Blue Jays, the American League Champions, are the first Canadian team to play in the World Series. The Braves, on the other hand, have played in five World Series, the most recent being the seven game thriller against the Minnesota Twins last year. Atlanta was defeated in the seventh, and deciding game, 1 - 0 in 10 innings. The winning pitcher was Jack Morris, who was 3 - 0 in the series against Atlanta. Morris was voted last year's MVP. Atlanta will once again face Morris, this time as a Tbronto Blue Jay. He signed with Tbronto as a free agent after last year's Fall Classic, a move he was highly criticized for. Jack Morris will bring a 7 - 3 lifetime record versus the Braves into Atlanta Fulton County Stadium for game 1. Starting for Atlanta will be 20 game winner, Tbm Glavine, who was hammered in his last outing in Game 6 of the National League Championship Series against the Pittsburgh Pirates. In that game, Glavine yielded a playoff record 8 runs in the second inning before manager Bobby Cox mercifully removed him. This first game should set the tone for the games to follow. Morris will attempt to continue his dominance of Atlanta hitters, while Glavin will be out to prove to himself and the baseball world why he is Cy Young material. The Braves will have a psychological advantage following a walk on the razor's edge versus Pittsburgh in the NLCS. The Braves gave new meaning to the term 'cardiac kids', with a 3 rur rally in the bottom of the ninth inning with 2 outs, to clinch a World Series berth. The Pirates led the entire way, until Atlanta fulfilled their destiny to appear in a second straight World Series. Tbronto should match up better against the Braves left - handed pitchers than the Pirates did. The Blue Jays success will hinge on the performance of Devon White, Roberto Alamar, and Joe Carter. Lead off man, White must get on base often and avoid his nemesis, the dreaded strike out. The No.2 hitter, Alomar was voted MVP of the ALCS and will have to continue his timely hitting. Carter will have to use his powerful hitting, 34 homeruns and 118 RBI's during the regular season, to keep the Tbronto offense in full swing. Atlanta has a strong bull pen with the depth needed to be successful. The Braves pitchers must control the tempo of the game with accurate and intelligent pitches. The Braves offense must be patient and let the Blue Jays pitchers make the mistakes. The Braves, like Toronto, must get the lead off hitter, Otis Nixon, on base often. Nixon's base running skills will then be a very potent weapon. Also, Terry Pendleton must bring his game into the level it was during the regular season. Pendleton tied Pittsburgh's Andy VanSlyke for most hits (199) during the regular SPORTS TRIVIfl 1. What pitcher did Babe Ruth victimize for the final homer of his illustrious career? 2. Pendleton was the catalyst that started the ninth inning rally in Game 7 of the NLCS, when he led off the inning with a solid double. That type of leadership will be a key to Atlanta's success. David Justice and Jeff Blauser must also contribute on offense. Justice, the clean up hitter, has 12 home runs and 23 RBI's in his last 41 games, and he needs to continue his fine hitting. Blauser has been a silent force with 11 homers since June. He must be able to deliver the power bits if the other power hitter cannot deliver at the plate. Both Atlanta and Tbronto have a healthy mixture of pitching and hitting talent. The first two games in Atlanta should decide this contest. If Atlanta sweeps the first two home games they may have too much confidence for Tbronto to bounce back in time. Look for the Braves Blauser and maturing catcher Berryfield to add the extra spark Atlanta needs. Also, Glavine and Avery should return to form and pitch with the zest of World Champions. Tbronto should get an extra boost from veteran Dave Winfield, but that may not be enough. Jack Morris will have to improve on his performances in the ALCS, or pay the consequences of a hungry Atlanta offense. Fate seems to be on the side of Bobby Cox and his Braves. Look for the tomahawk chop of the Atlanta Braves tc prevail over the Blue Jays in 6 games. WOMEN'S SOCCER GAMES J.C.C. 1 Niagara C.C. 0 On Sunday, September 20th, the Lady Cannoneers won their third game of the season over host Niagara Community College 1-0. Kim Hicks, the Cannoneer's coach, was very happy with her team's performance and said thai this game was J.C.C.'s \ best game of the season\. J.C.C. rccieved a strong performance in goai by Heather Nichols (16 saves). J.C.C. 8 Clinton C.C 0 On Friday, October 4th, the Cannoneers routed Clinton Community College 8-0 for their fifth win of the season. The Cannoneers were scoring so readily, Coach Hicks switched the roles of her offensive and defensive players. This created a unique opportunity for the Lady Cannoneers to learn to play different positions, which should benefit the team throughout the season. According to Coach Hicks, even though they were outmanned and badly outscored, \the Clinton athletes played a clean and sportsmenlike contest.\ J.C.C. 1 N.C.C.C. 0 On Tuesday, October 13th, Jefferson Community College defeated host North Country Community College in an overtime thriller 1-0.
