A time when all the lectures, pamphlets and panel dieussions no longer give us the real picture. What's missing is the human stuff. The dreams. The hopes and disappointments. The anger. The courage. There comes a time... She's Busy A time when we remember that we're all human. IS H ll/ IS O U IS JL by Mark Rounds CANNON STAFF WRITER Millions of Americans are living in constant fear of an affliction that has reached epidemic proportions. This disease is caused by a virus known as HIV. Yes, this dreaded disease is AIDS (Acquired Immuno Deficiency Syndrome). AIDS is so feared because there is no known cure and the HIV virus leads to certain death, usually within two years. AIDS is also frightening due to it's methods of transmission, which range from sexual intercourse, blood transfusions, and the sharing of hypodermic needles. Although millions of dollars have been spent to educate the public, there are still many misconceptions about AIDS and the HIV virus. In an effort to enlighten people about this plight on humanity, BEFORE FOREVER was created by choreographer Trina Collins, playwright Robert Baraett, and composer Micki Rossi in 1988. This dance-theatre piece is performed live by five members of Danceteller, an ensemble of dancers and actors/actresses. Together this troupe has performed over 1000 concerts in theatres, colleges, and universities throughout the United States. All of the dialogue in these performances were drawn from actual interviews with people living with AIDS. BEFORE FOREVER will be performing Thursday, November 12th, at 8:00 P.M. in the McVean Student Center. This performance is free of charge and all students; traditional, non- traditional, young and old, are urged to attend. For more information, please call (786-2271) or (786-2200). RED WHO ? JOHNNY WHAT? by Lauri Elliot CANNON STAFF WRITER What do you get when you; blend rap and comedy? Instant' insanity! That's exactly what Red Johnny and the Round Guy presented to a crowd in JCC's auditorium on September 14, 1992. Having developed their unique style while studying at Rutger's University, John Dimaggio and Tim Regan now travel the comedy circuit presenting their unusual style of comedy. The duo appear on campuses all over the nation and have also broken in to the professional world of comedy by appearing on such venues as MTV Comedy Hour and VH1 Stand - Up Spotlight. While at JCC, they were Red Johnny & The Round Guy interviewed via JCC's campus radio station. The early afternoon interview developed into a frenzy of comedy and lunacy, with a parting call, by the comedians, for anarchy. As Tim implored, \Let's find something to revolt against\ The revolution may be for comedy nationwide with Red Johnny and the Round Guy on the loose. LEAVE MESSAGES FOR THE CANNON* ROCK JCC, OR THE YEAR BOOK WE WANT- YOUR INPUT AND OPINIONS by Lauri Elliot CANNON STAFF WRITER What started as a duet fate destined to become a trio of musical talent. But what do you call yourselves, how do you decide on a name? For the acoustic trio, She's Busy, the answer was - \run a contest during a gig at a local bar.\ \Brought together by fate,\ the band members echoed, as they described their 21/2 years together. She's Busy is a harmony of three distinct voices that blend with a strong acoustic background. The group shared their style of music with a crowd in the McVean Theater on September 29,1992. This blend evolved from combining influences, such as James Taylor and the Indigo Girls, and from years of performing those favorites. \They are jammin'. They are hot,\ said Jennifer Kirby, a member of the audience. The band's new CD, Strange Bedfellows is receiving limited airplay on college radio stations. The band members describe their production as a collaborative effort. All members arrange, as well as write lyrics. When asked what their favorite venues are, they replied, \coffeehouses.\ Selena, the lead singer, compared coffeehouses to playing in clubs, by stating that, \Coffeehouse people are more open to new music. Bars are for alcohol, pickups and pool.\ Mike Walentuk, a student and admirer said, \I think they're great. I like coffeehouse styles of music.\ A band full of energy, She's Busy will continue to play college campuses and coffeehouses waiting for that destined break. • Roger Gillen IRISH BALLADEER VISITS JCC by Lauri Elliot CANNON STAFF WRITER Roger Gillen, Rolling Stone Magazines 1991 Rookie of the Year, played to a small crowd in the theater, Tuesday, October 5, 1992. Initially recognized in 1980 at a National Talent Search in Ireland, his homeland, Gillen plays the college circuit and clubs within the New York City area. Reminiscent of early James Taylor or Don McLean, Gillen's distinctive voice accents his brand of ballad and storytelling. Gillen writes his own lyrics, often drawing on life experiences. When asked about his style of song writing, Gillen stated, \Nothing happens by chance. I believe in the theory of 90% perspiration versus 10% inspiration. It definitely takes the 90%.\ Gillen receives very little exposure in Europe, primarily relying on college radio and live audiences. Growing up in Ireland , pre - U2, there wasn't the opportunity for exposure that bands are now experiencing. As Gillen quipped,\ I grew up in the backwaters of Ireland.\ One happy listener described the show as, \full of thought provoking music.\ With song titles such as, Rattle Like Thunder and Don't Take Our Freedom. Gillen requires the audience to ponder some of life's many questions. One young audience member, Shane Harper Long, 2, enjoyed the show so much that he couldn't resist rushing to the stage and joining in with his own unique style of dance. With further exposure, Roger Gillen is sure to receive more recognition.
