An album starts off with the lines \Oh 1 just don't know where to begin.\ And then it ends with a scrawny four-eyed rock singer jerkily asking, \What's so funny 'bout peace, love an understanding?\ Is this smart rock n roll? Well it's pretty close. Elvis the C has forsaken, (well almost) his 57 tender and the swirling organ riffs of My Aim is Drue and This Year's Model for a more laid back, middle-of-the-road type style. Although the music has been \pumped down\ the lyrics are still tantalizing and biting as ever. Take Oliver's Army for (example; with its references to \white niggers\ \check-point Charlies\ and ° Johannesberg\ and a bit of political anti- apartheid thrown in for good luck is as vicious and biting as anything he has produced to date. Oliver's Army, musically sounds like a rollicking piano romp, something from the late 6<Ts. Also, Senior Services with its soul tempo which doesn't know the meaning of equilibrium, sounds off resentment at the upper class. *i want your company car/ i want your girlfriend and lover/1 want your place at the bar,\ cries CosteHo. Armed Forces, (Costello's third album, his second with the Attractions) seems to be an example of how a post new wave guitarist can \conform\ his style in order to appeal to a more sophisticated audience. Moods For Moderns, soaked with Kraftworkian keyboard electronics is a perfect example of this. Nick Lowe, producer and author of P*ace, Love and Understanding has purposely cornered Elvis and the Attractions into the matrix of commercial, but appealing rock music. With the exception of Goon Squad and Peace, Love and Understanding, Armed Forces musically sounds like a new wave Rubber Soul. Greenshirt from one side vocally recalls Norwegian Wood and Two Little Hitlers with its melodic guitar hook sounds like She Said, She Said. Although Armed Forces reeks with lyrical vengence, it's interesting to note that the Elvis \contempt\ ballads about the opposite sex have almost completely disappeared from this album. Only Party Girl and Peace, Love and Understanding hint at disgust for the female sex. It's hard to believe that the man who wrote nerd songs about \No Action\ \Lip Service, (that's all you'll ever get from me)\ and I'm not Angry,\ has conformed to more accessible standards. In a way I feel betrayed, and in a way Fm glad that Elvis CosteHo is finally getting the commercial and critical recognition that he deserves.
