REVERSION to the root mean- ing of the word History—'to know or learn by inquiry is the basis of all modern work in that subject whether it be done from the point of our historian, teacher or pupil. And this meaning is fittingly found in the language of the Grecian land, whose history furnishes, for those who seek ito know, the foundation of all that is best in culture and intellectual de- velopment. The analytic power so characteristic of the Greek mind is clearly reflected in the careful dis- tinction of ideas shown in their lan- guage by the existence of two words corresponding to our \knowledge the one translated \knowledge the other \knowledge gained by in- quiry.\ The distinction between these two is that between the old and the new idea of History, and it may not be far-fetched to suggest 'that the changed conception is a re- sult of the approval of the modern mind to that ancient type of clear- cut analysis. However, that may be, it has revolutionized the study of history in our schools. To teach facts is no longer tbe • aim, it is rather to teach the mean- ing of facts, and as \knowledge gained by inquiry\ is more inclusive then \knowledge\ so \the meaning of facts\ is more inclusive than \facts.\ Let one put in connection with any fact not merely the ques-
