SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 4 TH , 2006; 8 P.M. FOR MORE INFORMATION CONTACT JULI POMAINVILLE Radio Bob Performs at Fundraiser Robert Bayliss StaffWriier Last Saturday night, St. Lawrence students were invited to party for a good cause during a Thelmo spon- sored fundraising bash at the Best Western Univer- sity Inn. Students were charged a five dol- lar cover charge, which went di- rectly to the Can- ton Daycare, which is a non- profit organiza- tion. A raffle was also held-to benefit the daycare and included prizes, such as a pedicure by Hair Designs, a Sergis gift certify cat.e, and. a new snowboard. This fundraiser is an annual event put on by the organization, but this is the first year it was directed toward students and held at the University Inn. \It was coincidental that the band and the Best Western were both available,\ noted daycare trustee and VP of Finance at the University Kathy Mullaney. Canton Daycare hoped to raise $2000 to help cover the cost of a ten-week summer camp for the chil- dren, according to the Executive Director, Deborah Dixon. Dixon also said that the band, Radio Bob, agreed to play at the event at no cost, and that space at the Best Western was also donated. Thelmo provided food for the event. \It's good to see students giv- ing back to the community and en- joying themselves-at the same time,\ noted Jason Eisenhuth, '06.. This event was also notable for the fact that it was the first mani T festation of the -university's new policy towards alcoholic events. '. When asked what she thought of this new approach to the hotly debated alcohol issue, senior Amy Benvenuti said she was \Glad to see they were trying something dif- ferent and opening up some new options.\ Most of the student attendees mi- grated in after the hockey team's victory over Clarkson, although a good portion of the crowd did not know about the fundraising aspect of the.event,, but. were there to show their support for the new alcohol policy. Bev- erages were made avail- able to those of age for-the price of $2.75 - for a beer, and $4 for a glass of wine. The. band, Radio Bob, was\ accom- panied by members of the Singing Sinners, Lyhdsey Rawson '06, Kaia Klockeman '06, and Melina Cruz '06. The music was light and fun, ,and induced many, including daycare Head of the Board Brett Thatcher, to dance the night away. Although it is impossible to : say whether this event assuaged stu- dent fears of lame events sponsored by the university, it is safe to say that a good time was had by many. Photo by Jamie Dyer Weekend Punk Run Proves a Success University Communications i . • • - One of the most heated rival- ries in all of college sports - be- tween St. Lawrence and Clarkson in hockey, of course - became the unlikely impetus for . a team effort that benefited lo.cai health-care Organi- zations. A St. Lawrence sorority and a Clarkson fra- ternity put the ri- valry aside and joined forces for a good cause that will benefit two health- - care organizations. Prior to the men's hockey game at Clarkson's Cheel Arena on Friday, January. 27, 12 men from Sigma Phi Ep- silon will gathered at the Kappa Delta Sigma sorority house in Canton. In a display of ri- valry-defying hospi- tality, KDS hosted the fellows for din- ner, after which pairs of runners from-both organizations ran the puck back to Potsdam, in time to drop it on the ice at Cheel for the 7 p.m. face-off. Both groups collected dona- tions and sponsorships for the event, with proceeds going to Canton-Potsdam Hospital and the .American Cancer Society. They also collected donations at the game, and presented the hospital's foundation with a check for $2,000. According to former KDS presi- dent Amy Benvenuti '06, of Barre, Vermont,\ who coordinated the event, the idea came from mem- bers of \SigEp.\ \They ap- proached me at the end of Last semes- ter to suggest the idea and both houses were very enthusiastic about it,\ Benvenuti says, adding that they also did most of the, uh, leg work necessary to pull the event off. \They divided the route into sec- tions. There are 12 one-mile intervals with drivers mak- ing the exchange of runners each mile. New York State troopers have ; been identic fied and are in complete support of this activity! the guys at SigEp are completely to . thank for. this idea and organizing most everything. They have been amazing and it has been a pleasure to work with them.\ Photo by Grant Girrie Voting has officially begun for the ACE 2006 Spring Concert;: To east your ballot, follow this link: http://www.stlawu.edu/ace/ .
