SLU Buddies Group Hosts Barbecue Dinner CandinaHarmer Contributing Writer Over 250 SLU Buddies, Can- ton Buddies and their families gathered on a stormy winter night February 10 th , to greet each other in the cafeteria at Canton Central School. Dinner that night was put on by Sub- way who prepared a variety of different sandwiches, to suit all the children's tastes, and pro- vided chips and cookies. In the fall the SLU Buddies had done an Open House BBQ, which was also a success. The board had decided before winter break that they would try to organize some- thing in the Spring for those that were just coming into the pro- gram to be able to meet with parents and for those who had already met the parents, a chance to catch up with how things were going with the chil- dren.; The trouble came in try- ing to plan something for win- tertime when the thought of having sandwiches with make- your-own sundaes came up. The'board then sought out the help of Subway in preparing the sandwiches. They were ex- tremely helpful in working with what SLU Buddies had for a budget and on top of subs, they. also provided the chips and cook- ies at no extra change. Over- all, the event went over very well and was enjoyed by every- one that attended. SLU Bud- dies -would like to extend their thanks to Subway for making the event .such a success. SLU Buddies is a school-based mentoring program where St. Lawrence students are paired up With children who suffer from academic, social, or behav- ioral needs and meet with their buddies one day a week for an. hour. The program started with 27 students in the Fall of 2003 and today has 128 students that meet with 128 Canton Students. Thanks to our Greek students, a pilot branch of the program is being held in Coltpn on Friday ' afternoons for the rest of the se- mester. New Party Resolution Meets Campus Approval ¥^„„: D '„ do not adhere^o University Jessi Burg Contributing Writer This past week, Thelmo passed a resolution regarding parties on campus. The resolution, which can be found at http://it.stlawu.edu/ -thelmo/studentlife.htin, is aimed at making it easier for students to throw parties, while simultaneously encouraging re- sponsible drinking. If the ad- ministration approves the resor lution, there will be six major changes to the party policy. The time period for registering a party will be shortened from two weeks to three days; there will be no moratorium on parties at the beginning of the spring se- mester, although the fall mora- torium will remain; the defini- tion of a party will change from five people to ten; registered par- ties will be allowed on Thursday nights in addition to Friday and Saturday nights, provided they adhere to quiet hours;.one per- son in the administration will be in charge of parties, rather than several; and a three strike sys- tem will be implemented to de- termine punishment for organi- zations which hold parties and do not adhere^o University regulations or state or federal law- Parts of the resolution were controversial, most notably the section which requested the ad- ministration to allow registered parties on Thursday evenings, but for the most part, the Thelmo representatives were supportive of the resolution. Dean Petty was also generally in favor of the resolution, with a few small changes. She stated that all non-alcoholic parties would be approved for Thursday nights* although alcoholic ones would be limited to once a month. If there were a notice- able drop in attendance of Fri- day classes, this provision would be revoked. This policy seems to be a good compromise between the stu- dents desire to party, and the administration's desire for re- sponsible drinking. Dean. Petty \ applauds Thelmo. for introduc- ing student responsibility into the registered party policy,\ and is glad to open the way for dis- cussion of the policy. If passed by the administration, the new policy would be in effect for next Fall. PLEASE TAKE A MOMENT OF YOUR TIME TO FILL OUT THE FOLLOWING (VERY SHORT - 6 QUESTIONS) SURVEY.
