Yes. a new season is here and all 30 teams are equal... at least in the win/loss department. And for the majority of people on campus, our Yankees or Red Sox are look- ing wonderful on paper. Both teams made big moves in the off-season- and sit atop ESPN.com's power ranking with Boston gening the nod on offense, and New York with a better pitching staff (health permitting). So why then have I become disgusted with reading about baseball? Why am I not scouring the headlines for hours on end, getting the scoop on my favorite team or getting the dirt on all of my fantasy play- ers? Well, have you looked at the headlines? But 1 suppose I should be happy. At least they are going to have a season.. THE CASUAL OBSERVER EvanKivlen -Sports Editor photo by http:// www.qgustachwnicle.com Last Saturday, I was lounging and taking in the Match-Play Champi- onship on the ESPN network. As golf is not the most stimulating sport to watch on television, I began to analyze obscure aspects of the players and their attributes, I found myself re- marking on how different Tiger Woods looks with the goatee, how fat John Daly still is, and the remarkable chinstrap beard that was beings rocked by Shingo Katayama (right). But, what seemed to stand out the most was that practically ever golfer in the tournament employed some form of \Body English\ after a great deal of his shots, mainly tee-shots and putts by leaning, shouting, jumping up and down, waving their arms, etc. For rea- sons beyond me, this sparked a great deal of interest in me, which was fol- lowed by me wasting far too much time thinking about the aforementioned sub- ject. In case you are unaware, I'll atterhpt to give you a brief description of what \Body English\ actually is. Somewhere along the line, you have certainly seen this behavior in action, or maybe even used it yourself. Don't ask me where it came from, but certain people, athletes being largely guilty, feel they can change the course of their respective sport- ing action by making animated bodily gesticulations. First, I thought of the usual subjects found guilty of this act of making themselves look foolish in. hopes of influencing something that is out of their control. Below are two of the more infamous criminals: l.)Video Gamers:_Have you ever seen someone playing a racing or fighting game? It isn't uncommon to see them twitching and jerking all over the place or leaning into the imaginary corners and turns in hopes of saving every possible sweet second they can on the way to victory lane. 2.) Carlton Fisk: Most die-hard baseball fans can easily recall \Pudge\ Fisk's game winning home run in game six of the 1975 World Series. Quite possibly one of the most flamboyant examples of \Body English,\ Fisk made it practically all the way to first base jumping up and down and waving his arms in the direction of fair territory in hopes that he might be able to sway me winds at Fenway Park that night and make sure the result would be a home run. From that point, I thought of ways that I may be able to prove that this is a pipe-dream for those who aren't confident enough in their abilities and feel as though they can take a shot without wishing they could have it back again to do differently. Here are a couple hypothetical examples that could prove my points: Insurance Salesmen: Do you think you would be swayed if Ned Mucklethorpe from The Agency swung his arms around and shouted as you sat pondering your decision? A Bus Driver: Would you feel .safer if your local public transportation expert Was jumping up and down and leaning into every' turn on your commute to work? .
