Playing aTTistless game of, football, the. Varsity was defeated by Roches- ter University last Saturday afternoon at Rochester, by, the score of nine- teen to five. The team, except durirfg the third quarter, did not shew the same snap which characterized its game with Union, and which is so _jiecessary Jin- order to win victories. -^.-•fia^wrence has no, excuse to offer as Rochesterjjwori a clean, decisive •y. Skirting th1F~~tackles arid-, plunging through center, the Roches- ter backfield carried the ball time and again down toward the St. Law- rence goal line. Their mainstay ini the offensive part of the gatae was J. Forsythe who made over ten yards through the Varsity line almost at will. * Brown, however, made the most sensational play of the game, when he made a beautiful kick from placerxfent which soared over the goal posts. This happened during the , middle pf the, third quarter and; gave Rochester a ^sufficient number _, of points to win. The Varsity really . outplayed its opponents* during this period of the game,- for the St. Law- rence backs carried the ball practi- cally the entire length of the 'field. A heavy'penalization for holding forced the team \to the surrender the ball when within reach ^of Roches- ter's line.. * Coach Reed seems to be of the opinion that the squad will do con- siderable, hustling during the practice periods of the coming week. It would not do any great harm if the people in the University who are interested ,. would go out on the field with the \ team and show the spirit which every man oh the team needs'to help him play the game with snap. . ' The toss was won by i Rochester, and Kinney kicked off for St. Law- rence to J. Forsythe, who brought • the ball, to the . thirty yard Hne.^ Brown started the game for Roches- ter by making twelve yards around right end, and Yorkey and Forsythe helped j matters by going fj\e more through center and tackle/ The St. I^awrenjce line held well on the next- play, bjit a forward pass, Brown, to formation Welch was thrown for lac loss of five to Forsythe at this point fell into the .ball was lost immediately' yards, and had. to puiit^ at midlield. Dur- ing this period St. Lajwrence was al- most continually on the defensive in her own territory. j ' ,The seeoid quarter started wich Rochester in possession of the ball on the Vars3ty's ; fprty-yard line, from which position Brown again tried.la-,; placement kick without result. St.!;' Lawrence scrimmaged from the twen- ty-five yard' line, and from the iirst' showed more 'life than it had mani- fested during theiearly part of the game. Log£.n gained five yards, but Timmerman could not make any distance around tackle, and Welch was forced to punt. Rochester began to carry the ball, as during.the first period, and Forsythe; Yorjkey, and Brown soon had the ball within eight yards of thjj Varsity, line. A fumble at J this poiirfe gave the l>all to St. Lawrence, ana iiogan, whp had re- covered the pigskin, put new life in- to the game i by traveling twenty-five yards on an end run. TimmeTman failed to gain, and Kinney was drawn back on a punt formation; He dove through the line at center !for a gain of fifteen yards, and | Logan and Welch followed suit, making over ten yards through tackle and around the elid.! Timmerman could f make no gain!, and Logan skirted'right tackle' for ten yards. A forward pass, Welch to ijogan, nettejd nine yards, next play; Timmerman i down.
