HOE A LT H The life of the party can cause death on the road Take steps to make sure that this is a safe as well as happy holiday season The Medical Society of the State of New York (MSSNY) warms those who aspire to be the life of the party that being fueled by too much alcohol can make you a deadly force on the road. Impaired driving is one of America's deadliest problems. Every 30 minutes, nearly 50 times a day, someone in the United States dies in an alcohol-related automobile accident, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Americans who drink and dnve after holiday parties and festivities make the period between Thanksgiving and New Year's Eve one of the most deadly and dangerous seasons due to alcohol-related crashes. Since 1981. every President of the United States has proclaimed December National Drunk and Drugged Driving (3D) Prevention Month to publicize their commitment to preventing impaired dnving and to promoting the use of des- ignated drivers and sober ride programs. The month of December and the New Year's Eve holiday are often highlighted by significant increases in state and local law enforcement with such efforts to combat impaired driving as sobriety checkpoints and saturation patrols. MSSNY supports efforts to identify impaired dnvers so as to make the high- ways safer and also to help alcohol-abus- ing drivers receive treatment and, hope- fully. become rehabilitated. nne n mee n anm on % What cna in So ntwe s review nn o TOGETHER! If you catch a buzz, catch a ride Too many people do not understand that alcohol, drugs and dnving do not mix. Impaired driving is no accident, ror is it a victimless crime. NHTSA notes that impaired drinking is the most fre- quently committed violent cnme in the United States. Designating a sober driver before the party begins is one of several simple ways to avoid a tragic crash or an arrest for impaired driving. Last year students from the Medical Society of the State of New York founded Doctor for Designated Dnving <DFDD) to encour- age people who drink to take along a non- drinking designated dnver to dnve them home. DFDD physicians and medical stu- dents work with bars, restaurants, clubs and other establishments that serve liquor to agree to provide designated dnvers with incentives - often free soft dnrks and food - to remain sober for the evening so that they can make sure their frends and family get home safely.
