Decking hospice halls Asharoken Garden Club makes new stop BY PATRICIA PROVEN The Asharoken Garden Club, known around town for its annual tradition of spreading holiday cheer with decorative wreaths, this year added Hospice House in East Northport to its list of venues to visit. This is Hospice House's second holi- day season in East Northport since it opened in 2004 and its first one graced by a visit from the garden club. Last Thursday morning, the volunteers were busy decorating a Christmas tree in the lobby and touching up patient and med- itation rooms with garland, wreaths, and floral arrangements. Colette Malik. a member of East Northport Rotary, also donated a festive menorah. Andrea Brovetto. a garden club member who is also Rotary president, said. \I reached out to all I knew asking it anyone had one and was surprised to receive this beautiful new one. People are great.\ The decorations aid the Hospice House's mission of making care as com- fortable as possible for the terminally ill. Joyce Palmieri, the hospice's director of patient services, said, \It's to provide some comfort during holiday time, to provide a sense of home and a sense of normalcy in their lives.\ Of garden club members, she said. \'They're doing a magnificent job. They're just full ofjoy and comfort, and stand for everything that symbolizes a holiday time.\ On Tuesday,. the garden club met at St. Paul's Methodist Church in Northport to prepare 100 mugs with flo- ral arrangements that are delivered to shut-ins referred by Huntington Town's Meals on Wheels program. Brovetto said, \Last summer, we received a proclamation from the Town for this program.\ The club repeats the effort on ~ Mother's Day. -~ Also this week, the garden club pre- pared holiday wreaths to be hung on the doors of Northport and Asharoken vil- tage halls. The Asharoken Garden Club raises money for the decorations through their fundraising - luncheon - held every September. Brovetto said. Proceeds also support the club's scholarship fund: donations to the Ecumenical Lay Council Food Pantry; and awards -to winners of its annual Neighborhood Street Gardens program. Hospice volunteers needed Hospice House has an ongoing need for volunteers, who assist patients living on site as well as those who are cared for in their homes. Volunteers must be trained; many devote as little as three hours a week and may contribute by vis- iting patients, bringing them groceries or books, reading to them and assisting their families. \It's what you would do if someone on your block was sick,\ said hospice staff member Pat Quigley.
