Some passengers would Itke a line to New Haven. And no one on Suftolk 's North Shore wants a new terry terminal built in his hometown. Giant that? So did we - long before tax- payers from Maine to Hawan shelled out tv c+ thirds of a million dollars for this waste ot a government document. Fees on the Sound\ The naked eye tells that tale. More commuters on them meaning less on the road? Pretty much com- mon sense and fifth-grade math. Demand for New Haven? The Bridgeport-Port Jefferson Steamboat Company, commonly called the Port Jeff Ferry, could have told you that. Opposition to a terminal in Shoreham or elsewhere in the area? Of course. Vocal North Shore residents don't want any new. heavy-duty commercial oper- auons here - as anyone even remotely involved with public policy already knows. KeySpan can't even expand an existing substation to provide more electricity with- out sparking an outcry from the NIMBY crowd. Maybe if the ferries were 20 feet long and ran on olive oil they 'd be okay. Speaking of NIMB Yism, since the ferry study's authors knew there would be objec- trons to any new terminals, they proposed a line from New Haven to \Generic Point. Long Island.\ We're not kidding. They even drew a map of said route: a line extending south from Connecticut and ending in the middle of the Sound - because no one is quite sure where Generic Point hes. Is this what passes for leadership today? The ferry company has also studied going to New Haven. It once asked people getting off the boat at Bndgeport if they would like to go there instead. Seventy per- cent said yes. Then the firm made a test run to see how long it would take and how much fuel would be used. Then it asked New Haven city officials about the idea (Surprise' No answer yet). We imagine all this cost a lot less than $640,000. And the information may even get put to use. as the ferry company actually could start a new service to New Haven. The study group's report. on the other hand, is nothing but a bunch of talking points for bureaucrats and NIMBYist worry warts. Is there no one in Albany or Washington with the nerve to stand up and say it's time government stop all but setting the people's money on fire with pointless studies? This state and nation have serious needs to be addressed. What's next, an analysis of the Long Island Expressway that reports it to be crowded during rush hour? Ronald F. lannacone, DPM 1st Vice President, Northport Chamber of Commerce Northport Roger Putnam for fire commissioner TO THE EDITOR: In December of 2004 I sent a letter to several of the local weekly's advising the residents of the East Northport Fire District that the East Northport Board of Fire Commissioners were working diligently on a project to put the resident taxpayers into long-term debt. The project entails demolishing an existing sub- station on Clay Pitts Road and replacing it with anoth: er building In addition. the project calls to build another substation on Laurel Road just south of Du kinson Avenue At that time I projected the debt to range between S2 and 4 milhon Subsequently in April 2005 1 obtained through a POH ot Into mation | aw < request a copy of the presentation ph Raga\ In that par ngC the prv’cdcd sacst wis s( nated at S6 67 imulhhon with an estimated S6 milton rond d would venture to estimate that the tinal costs would be closer to SC multhon This would coat taraparers based upon a S4 100 average tax assessment. an additional S62 27 a year for 20 years This is on top of your annual tire district taxes Having previously served as a commissioner of the East Northport hire Dastrict tor 15 years I feel this is an unwarranted expense and financial burden on the East Northport hire District taxpayers This bond issue only addresses the nonrecurring costs Issues not even addressed in this proposal are the recurnng costs e g. salaries, utilities, maintenance., etc . that will be incurred by the taxpayers. Therefore. I strongly urge the registered voters of the East Northport Fire District to support and elect Roger L. Putnam., Sr on Tuesday.
