Huntington wins county championship Bratton returns a kickoff 98 yards, setting a new county record BY ROBERT LEUNER Two years removed from a 19-game losing streak. controversy and a football program on the brink of being terminated, the Rocky Point Eagles stood on the cusp of eradicating those bitter memories last weekend. But for their failure on two post-touchdown conversions the Eagles would have realized the fulfillment of a complete turnaround. The Huntington Blue Devils defeated the Eagles 14-12 in a thrilling Division IH Suffolk County final at Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium at Stony Brook University last Saturday. It was not so much that Huntington (9-1) beat the Eagles as much as Rocky Point (8-2) lost the game. \Like Vince Lombardi said, 'We didn't lose; we just ran out of ume to win,\\ Rocky Point coach Bill Madsen said. \Really we haven't had a problem with [extra-point con- versions] all year. The Eagles led the favored Blue Devils 6-0 after a 10- play. 80-yard drive capped off by a Ben Swedish one- yard touchdown plunge. The drive was highlighted by a 49-yard run by Rocky Point quarterback Michael Krieger on the opening play. Unfortunately, a seemingly innocent missed point-after-attempt would rear its head as a key to Huntington's victory. Huntington pulled ahead at 11:19 of the second quar- ter when quarterback Zach Howell found Rhamel Bratton in the end zone for an 11-yard touchdown pass. Sam Cutone's point-after touchdown gave the Blue Devil's a 7-6 lead. But the Eagles, who dictated much of the first-half action, marched right back down field as the triple-option threat of Krieger, Ben Swedish and Brian LoRusso kept the Blue Devils off balance. With the ball on the 21-yard line. Kreger pitched left to LoRusso, but the ball fell short and Huntington recovered the fumble. The turnover was one of two committed by the Eagles on the day. Minutes later, the Eagles were knocking on the Blue Devils' door again. After Rocky Point's Jeff Piccolo par- ually blocked a Huntington punt, the Eagles took over on the Huntington 40. Six plays later. on fourth and «ix. with less than a minute in the half, an optuon pas from Michael Kingston to Joel Lepine fell incomplete Another lost opportunity for the Eagles Sull they only trailed by one as the half ended. The completion of the game, however. turned with the stan of the second half as Huntington's Shamel Bratton took a high bounce at the two- yard line from the opening kickoff and darted 98 yards for a touchdown., settung a new Suffolk County record in the process. \Nine of our luds stopped when it took that bounce.\ Madsen said \It threw our uming off. and before you knew it the hid was by us.\ If the Eagles were degected by the sudden tum of momentum, it didn't show, as Rocky Point proceeded to march 72 yards in seven plays on their next possession. Swedish's second touchdown from the one pulled the Eagles to within two of the Blue Devils. Madsen opted to try to knot the score with a two-point conversion, but LoRusso's sprint around the night side was snuffed out by Huntington's strong pursuit. From that point on, Huntington's defense stiffened. With time now against them, the Eagles began to move the ball once again. Following a missed 35-yard field goal attempt by Huntington. the Eagles took over at their own 20-yard line and again it was the running tmo of Krieger, Swedish and LoRusso that brought the ball to Huntington's 44 yard line. A pass interference call against Huntington gave the Eagles a first down at the Blue Devils\ 35 yard line. But the Eagles offense crumbled A final fourth and eight pass to Lepine fell imcomplete and Huntington's utle was secured. \Obviously we're not a throwing team,\ Madsen said \With 55 seconds to go we'd have to get the hall down to the 10 for a field goal At that point we were thinking wWOTré As stccesslul as Rocky Point's ball wontrol oftense proved against a stingy Huntington defense, the Eagles defense was equal to the task Rocky Point stunted and blitzed the whote attemoon. keeping Howell cli 1S. 117 yards) off balance Some two weeks ago, Howell ht up Comsewogue for five touchdowns in a 34 10 thrashing of the Wammor \We knew thal we couldn't play our base defense ag.unst them.\ said Madsen \We knew that we had to do something different And it worked. they scored only one offensive touchdown against us We thought that if we brought as many kids up [to the line of senmmage] as we could, it would [mess] them up and it did I thought we played real well on defense We just turned the ball over at a few inopportune times But we played as well as we could.\ Rocky Point may have lost a game., but they won the war. Some 2,000 Rocky Point fans. along with the entire Huntungton football team, applauded the Eagles as they departed the stadium.
