District designated as First Amendment School Students trained in rights, responsibilities and his BY ELISE PEARLMAN It can be said that no rights are more fundamental to Americans than the freedoms of religion, speech, press, assembly and petition that are promised by the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. In June, the Northport-East Northport School District was designated as a First Amendment School. joining the select rank of 17 schools across the country commit- ted to affirming fundamental democratic principles and putting them into action. David Scott, Coordinator of P. A TC.H. (Participatory Awareness through Community Help, applied for the three-year designation, which comes with a yearly stipend of $10,000. The total $30,000 in funds are dedi- cated to promote programs that deepen students' under- standing of the ideals and values associated with the First Amendment. The project is to be a unified K-12 program involv- ing three schools: Pulaski Road Elementary School, East Northport Middle School and Northport High School. with the district becoming the first in the coun- try to enter the First Amendment Schools project in this fashion, Scott said. The First Amendment Schools project is cosponsored by the First Amendment Center and the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, an organiza- uon that advocates educational excellence and reform. According to the First Amendment center's vision state- ment, these liberties should not be taken for granted, as the country's history continues to recount an \ongoing struggle to extend the promise of freedom more fully and fairly to each and every citizen.\ Scott said that if we are to have civecally and socially responsible citizens, it is essential to focus on schools, one of the arenas where children first form these values. Scott pointed to the results of a two-year, million-dol- lar study of more than 100,000 students in high schools across the country. The survey, conducted by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, indicated that American high school students are lagging in their understanding of the First Amendment. particularly the rights of free press and free speech.
