Clinton said he tured that all around with a campaign that promised to rein- force basic values, rebuild a sense of com- munity, reform the government and re- invigorate America's role asa world lead- er. \We could honestly discuss new and different ideas and break out of the vice of these deadening, bomb-throwing cam- paigns that had dominated America's pol- itics for a long time,\ he said. Those ideas, coming down the middle of the political road between conservatism and liberalism, became known as Clinton's \third way.\ and he won two elections as the \new Democrat.\ Clinton said he was proud of many of his accomplishments, as he presided over years of economic growth, declining crime. reduced abortion and expanded international trade. He signed a welfare reform bill that onginated in the Republican House of Representatives. after vetoing two earler versions and reduced thenational debt. which has nce climbed again under President Bush \I didn't just want to reduce the deficit.
