Battle of the Bands? Sounds like a great cause Ninth event gives musicians a venue and ecumenical food pantry a boost BY ELISE PEARLMAN This month when Trinity Episcopal Church's Houghton Hall fills with Gypsy Fiction's \jazzy funky\ sound or Dissent's \heavy metal alternative,\ the audience will not simply be having a great time or listening to original music. They will also have donated to a great cause. The ninth Bartle of the Bands is sched- uled to take place on Saturday, November 19 from 7 to 11 pm and will showcase the unique musical offerings of seven area high school bands. Father Eric Weaver said the idea of reviving the Battle of the Bands came up as his youth group searched for a new community service project. The event gives teenagers a \safe location\ to enjoy themselves and interact with their friends, and has proven enormously successful as a fundraiser. he said. \Kids have a lot of good in them. and this is an example of the good they can do.\ Weaver said. Proceeds from the event benefit the Ecumenical Lay Council Food Pantry that represents churches and synagogues throughout Northport-East Northport. Harborfields and Kings Park school dis- tricts \There are about 90 families in Northport and East Northport in desperate need of food.\ Weaver said. While partic- pating churches and synagogues respond to the need, approximately $5,000 is needed each month to supplement these donations, he sard. Ray Roel. an East Northport resident and church menber, has been coordinat- ing the event since the first Battle of the Bands took place in June 2004. He sard that the church has become a sought-after venue for local high school groups and, often, 25 to 30 bands endeavor to perform. To accommodate the demand, Roel said, _ \'No bands can play battles back to back.\ . That means that any group that performed in the last Battle of the Bands in September cannot play this month. Roel said he believes that the Battle of the Bands is in sync with \Long Island's | tradition of being a fertile place for - music.\ He said, \It's all original music. {The - high school bands] composeand perform | their own work: hard rock. acoustic, reg- gae.\ In addition to being a social event, Roel said that the battle is a great way for | teenagers to \tap into the music culture,\ and \for bands to get to know each other and collaborate.\ He noted that previous battles have raised over $8,000 for the food pantry. Each group will perform one half-hour set. Forever in Arms. a \heavy rock\ band from Greenlawn makes its debut, while Dissent is batthng for the third time. Scott Byrne, a Kings Park semor, said that Dissent is \a cool-sounding. trendy name which fits the style\ of his group's \heavy alternative music ~ Other members include drummer Vinny Nuzzi, singer Chns Constantino, and bass player Matt Hasse. \It's for a good cause. and we'll be able to reach out to a different crowd and bands from different areas. It's an easy show for our fans to go to,\ Byme said Emma James sings and plays guitar for Continued on page A11 PARTIES In our state—Memdmae confided indoor arena' B'RTHVAY ALL YEAR ROUND!
