Serving sick children for 56 years and counting Northport ladies have longstandmg lmk to St Charles Hospztal Auxiliary BY ELISE PEARLMAN This year. the Northport Chapter of St. Charles Hospital Auxiliary, a group that raises money for pediatric programs at S1. Charles Hospital in Port Jefferson, celebrates its 56th anniversary. The association between the hospital and this group of dedicated women developed out of the desperate effort to save the life of one child. During the height of the polio out- break in the late 1940s, a Northport child contracted the dreaded disease, the local chapter's president Irene Francis said. While St. Charles Hospital in Port Jefferson had a pedi- ame rehabilitation department. it lacked an iron lung that would assume breathing action for the paralyzed child. Francis indicated that friends and neighbors of the sick child worked to raisethe funds needed to purchase this tife-saving machinery for the hospital. Subsequently, several Northport cou- ples began traveling to St. Charles Hospital to play games with young patients. A group of women formed a workshop making toys to brighten hos- pital stays and joined the St. Charles Hospital Auxiliary in 1949. Over the years, the Northport Chapter has grown to Photo by Alan Pearlman Northport Chapter member JudyOrobona; Recording Secretary Marilyn Chiodo, mem- ber Liz Whiteman; Historian Dot Holland; Honorary Director Gladys McCoy; Treasurer Vivian Forgione; President rene Francis; Committee Chair for the Coltection of Pennies Virginia Weick; Director and former President Carol Hoxie; Hospitality Char Wendy Erlandson; member Judy Ross; member Andrea Brovetto, and First Vice President Karen Breen.
