New statis- tics showing that nearly half a million American babies were born prematurely in a single year highlight the intensity of the prematurity problem in this country. New York State's rate increased 7 percent. from 10.7 percent premature births to 114 percent. As part of a multi-year campaign to address the growing rate of premature birth, the March of Dimes has designat- ed the third Tuesday of November (the 15th this year) as Prematurity Awareness Day The March of Dimes is a natronal voluntary health agency with a mission to improve the health oft buhies by pre venting birth defects. premature birth and infant mortality Some women are at higher risk While preterm labor and delivery can happen to any pregnant woman,. some women are more Iikely to have preterm labor or birth than other women. The March of Dimes has identified three groups of women who are at greatest sk of preterm labor and birth: * women who have had a previous preterm birth * women who are pregnant with twins, triplets or more * women with certain uterine or cer- vical abnormalities Some studies have found bfestyle factors that increase mish of preterm labor. These include smoking. drinking alcohol, using illegal drugs, working long hours with long periexds of standing and too much stress. Not receiving ade- quate prenatal care can also increase risk, as can certain medical conditions - including urinary tract and vaginal infections, diabetes, high blood pressure and obesity or being underweight.
