In the battle for an open seat in the 16th legislative district, Dix Hills resident Steven H. Stem, an attorney who special- izes in elder law, defeated Republican candidate Frank Gargano, also a Dix Hills attorney, by an unofficial 7,307 to 6,100 votes. \We're just thrilled with the victory last night,\ Stem said on Wednesday. \It was a great night to be a Democrat.\ Gargano did not return phone calls seeking comment. Stem said, \I was an extremely difficult race, very close the entire way through. {Gargano} is a very strong opponent. Binder could not be reached for com ment on Tuesday night and did not return Continued on page All The Adventures of Tom Sawyer in N orthport Long Island premier starts Friday BY ELISE PEARLMAN Mark Twain's conung-cf—age tale about a Missouri boy growing up in a town bordering the great Mississipp River comes to life this week as the Northport-East Northport Community Theater presents The Advéniures of Tom Sawyer: The Broadway Musical. The story was conceived and writ- ten for Broadway by Ken Ludwig. with music and lyrics provided by Don Schlitz. The fact that the produc- tion is a Long Island premier has been the source of much excitement, Community Theater producer Bette Silver and director Jim Redding said. \It's a new step for us,\ Silver said. She added that this show offers a departure from the formula of staging well-known musicals like Annie or Oklahoma! Silver noted that 40 of the 60 actors onstage during each perfor- mance are children. In fact, so many was split into two groups, which alter- nate performances. \Because this show is geared to - children, the excitement level is high- ef, and the enjoyment level is higher,\ Silver said.
