Field hockey team out in quarterfinals Northport defeats Newfield, but falls short to Ward Melwlle, 3-0 BY JOHN WESTERMANN \It's been ages since we've been in the Suffolk County playoffs,\ Northport coach Deb Ferry said before the game on Newfileld's home turf. \Just one year,\ said an anonymous assistant. \It's been two decades since we've advanced to the second round,\ Ferry added. The assistant also failed to confirm this gloomy factoid. Clearly, coach Ferry is not a bright- eyed optimist before big games. But her team was well prepared and ready to rock, and they took out the higher- seeded Newfield Wolverines 1-0. Newfield's star, Empire Team player Krystal Napolitano, and her Wolverine team- mates played hard and smart and kept the pressure on high. But Napolitano's Empire teammate and Northport co- captain J.J. Diash was outstanding -- and frustrating - in the goal. The Tigers were outshot 10-4, with Dish turning aside all 10 Newfield shots. At the other end of the field, Newfield's goal was welil-tended by Nicole Willis, who recorded three saves. Northport captain Lauren Brainerd scored the game's only goal on a penal- ty comer from Erin Ehrhardt with 22:51 left in the second haif. The Northport defense of Lindsay Albanese, Heather Anderson, Liz Cicciarelli, co-captain Maura Hickey, Jonatha Tiffany and Kait Sullivan held on from there. After the tense, well-attended game, Ferry said, \We've been struggling through a tough schedule all year, so this is a very nice win for us to get. I told the girls to play strong. As the lower seed we had nothing to lose. Not to say that we were looking past Newfield, because they beat us both times we faced them this year, but we really want to play Ward Melville again. (Melville's legendary coach Nancy Cole was in the bleachers, scouting the game.) We were really close the first two times we played Melville, losing the second game in overtime. Our girls want another chance.\ The Northport Tigers and Ferry arrived at Ward Melvilie courtesy of a single goal by Lauren Brainerd.
