Editorial , Republicans showed poor sportsmanship Elecuon 2005 may have been just for local races, but some believe that :t is a reflection of how people are feeling about politics in general. especially in Suffolk County and in Huntington Town govern- ment, where Democratshave regained con- wol. We belheve that local races also say a lot about where the parties are headed, and the direction they should be taking. We congratulate the Democratic party 'for its success in this election. We also commend the voters. who have taken the ume to listen, understand and be informed. However, whenever there are viable candidates to choose from, we prefer to see political diversity rather than one-party domination on our municipal boards. The Republican candidates were not exactly sacrificial lambs. Many, like Allan Binder, Mark Capodanno, Toni Rettaliata- Tepe, and Frank Gargano had strong records and garnered a substantial number of votes. They were vocal and well-versed on the issues. While it was expected that Gregory Wagner would not beat Legislator Jon Cooper, he should be especially commend- ed for running a positive, issues-based campaign. But rancor within the Republican Party, especially in Huntington Town, is part of what seems to have eroded the Republicans' shot at securing a seat or two. To see victorious Democratic candidates extending Mark Capodanno, the Republican councilman they ousted, more courtesy and kind words than Capodanno's own party leaders astounds us. The players on a youth soccer team know more about good sportsmanship than some of the Republican Party leaders to whom we've spoken and some of the Republican candi- dates who seemed to have conveniently ducked out of reach, even as final election results were being tallied. And to hear town Republican Committee representatives say that Capodanno is not a \true\ Republican bewilders us. In the county and the town, Democrats, with theirefforts toward fiscal conservatism and their pledges to cut waste and taxes in government, sound more like the traditional Republican every day. The community needs your help and support to continue to forge ahead and get our legislators and local town officials to take notice of all our plights. What happens in one community can certainly hap- pen to other communities regardless of the township in which you live. We are one island and must act respon- sibly towards our neighbors. 1. If you live in a township that doesn't respect it's citizens, they will only have daytime meetings. 2. If you live in a township that goes against the rec- ommendations of the Suffolk County Planning Commission, that's disrespecting the citizens. 3. If you live in a township that doesn't share all it's building information with it's town board so they can make an informed decision about a project, that's disre- specting to the citezens. 4. If you live in a township more concerned with profit and green than people, shame on you for allowing that to happen. If any of the aforementioned items pertain to your town, don't you think it's time to say enough is quite enough, \I'm mad as hell and I'm not going to take it anymore.\ It's time good government was put at the forefront of all the people seeking political office. It's time government responded to the people throughout the years, not just when there's an election ard projects are rushed to completion. This year, in the Town of Huntington, some of the lit- erature sent for the most recent election was an absolute disgrace. Whoever was responsible for this type of liter- ature should be ashamed of themselves. It is my fervent hope that legal action is taken against the perpetrators of trash politics or at the ve F least 5: have a few candzydates Make your next in the future who refuse to candidates lower the bar to such an extent that a street curb looks about pledge fo you, six feet high. Where are the someone's ople who won't get in the mud i character...' mud? Where are the people who don't go into govern- ment just to have a pay- | check? So many questions.\so few real answers. The elections are over, at this point I have no clue who the winners or losers ard, but if it's a close election here in Huntington I have no 'doubt that the machines will be impounded, absentee ballots will be counted and recounted, candidates will be yelling and screaming that elections have been stolen and lawsuits will be filed. it a lesson to teach our children and grandchil- dren. who kicks and screams the loudest gets his way, for better or worse, that's what our system has become. It's time politicians played fair, took the results and stopped looking for who cheated whom out of an election. The candidate that works the hardest, meets the public, shares their ideas (if the paper will ever print them with no slanted agenda) deserves to win. Unfortunately, even with all that, some good, talented people lose, and then we as a community lose. Why would good people even try to become elected officials? The public at large feels entitled to beat up on politi- cians, why? Would you want your loved one to suffer at the hands of integrity assassins? There's time until the next election to say, I reject all negatively charged or slanted political literature. Make your next candidates pledge to you, in writing, that they will not engage in negative campaigning by impugning someone's character, family name or anything else that makes that candidate look like someone he's not.
