Stern, an attorney who special- izes in clder law, defeated Republican candidate Frank Gargano, also a Dix Hills attorney, by an unofficial 7,307 to 6,100 votes. \We're just thrilled with the victory last - night,\ Stern said on Wednesday. \It was a great night to be a Democrat.\ Gargano did not return phone calls | seeking comment.
