Slim Cook Continued from page B2 goes to show, you never do know where you're going to get your inspiration ~ Cook's decision to pursue an art career came with hus realization that custom building motorcycles and race cars was not big business back in his teens \Now you could get thousands of dollars for it, but back then it was maybe a hundred dollars\ His brothers. he said. were great mechanics, but were never able to make their shop \a viable business.\ After high school, Cook worked at several industrial steel fabncauon jobs, which is how learned how to weld \\We would get the blueprints to build this grant metal thing,\ he said. \We didn't even know what it was, it was just a part of something. That was interesting for a while, but | knew 1 didn't want to be doing that for 30 years.\ Instead, he went on to study art at the University of Okiahoma with Donald who is now one of the A RTS _ world’s premier sculptors Cook then camed a master s degree from Temple University's Tyler School of Ar, where eminent professor Stanley Lechtzin, an icon of the metal-smithing world, described Cook's work as \show _T H E ing genius.\ In 1980. Cook moved from Philadelphia to New York City where he made jewelry for varous designers in the downtown puak/new wave scene Cook and his wife. Barbara, a singer and pranmist who works as director of Communications for New York Sea Grant, left urban life behind and moved to Shorcham 18 years ago to muse thee children, Samantha, 17. and Collin, 12. Cook's form of expression changed as he con unued to be influenced by the local scene \I started out doing hittle stuff that progressively got bugger.\ he said. First came his phase of wooden lawn sculptures, which culminated with a 3O-toot wooden tower that, held up by rope and strewn with Chnstmas lights. was visible from Route 25A After the piece received notice in the Village Voie. u fell down Cook realized that wood sculptures could never withstand the wind and elements, so he decided to work with metal from then on.
