October or November 1s the best time to get vaccinated against influenza, com- monly called the flu, advises the Medical Society of the State of New York (MSSNY) as well as the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH ) and the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) If you do miss getting your flu shot in one of those months, getting vaccinated in December or even later can still be ben eficial. Flu season can begin as early as October and last as late as May. The flu 1s a contagious respiratory i- ness caused by influenza viruses According to the CDC. five to 20 per- cent of the US population gets the flu. and about 36,000 people die from it each year. New flu vaccine approved for upcoming season There are two types of vaveines * The \Alu shot\ is an inactivated vac- cine (containing hilled virus) that is given with a needle. The flu shot is approved for people older than ux months, including healthy people and people with chronic medical conditions. * The nasal-spray flu vaccine is made with live, weakened flu viruses that do not cause the flu and is approved for healthy people five to 49 years old who are not pregnant.
