Do we live in a wealthy suburb? What every Long Islander should know: a series from the Long Island Index BY CARRIE MEEK GALLAGHER Ask someane to describe Long Island and you're apt to hear the words \wealthy suburb\ That description is not totally wrong,. but it obscures impor- tant facts about our economy Continued First there's that word \suburb with its image of suited businessmen riding the LIRR to jobs in Manhattan. This image, always three parts myth, is now as out of date as rabbit ears. Today we have our own economy. Conservation Comtunued frum puge Al black this winter. according to a statement leased by the distrmut's publ relations hrm. The campaign makes it easy for Long Islanders to donate a turkey, supermarket turkey coupons, nonperishable food items or money to help end hunger and reduce food waste. For more information, contact Island Harvest at www.islandharvest.org or (516) 294-8528. Fully 80 percent of us work here on the Island, producing goods and services worth $123 billion a year. That puts us among the top 20 metropolitan areas nationwide. How is this economy doing? A fair answer is: \Things are good. But all is not well.\ Long Islanders do make more money than other Americans - at $43,856, about $3,800 more (nine percent). Our productivity is also higher and our unemployment rate lower. That's the good news. The bad news is, our lead is shrink- img. Back in 1990, we made $4,800 more, or 13 percent tin constant dollars). Two other indieatuors re-enforce the concern that we are losing out edge. One is the patents we generate. Since 1998 the number has fallen steadily. Our share of federal funding for research and development has also dropped. from 0.9 percent to O02 percent The decline in these measures of technology and inno- vation is unsettling High paying technical and profes- sional jobs are keys to a stronger econo- my. To get them we need employers able to create such jobs _.. and talented people to fill them. That last item is the real problem - probably the greatest threat to our eco- nomic future. In today's mobile society we compete with every other region to attract and retain talented employees. Our advantages in this competition include the Island's scenic beauty, good schools and proximity to New York City. We also have one huge liability. You know what it is. The high cost of housing and taxes here is already driving our family mem- bers and neighbors away. From 1990 to 2000, 20 percent of our population aged 18 to 34 left the Island. That's five times the national average. The loss of talented, educated young people - called the \brain drain\ - is a serious problem for employers and very bad news for our future. The corresponding good news is the growing recognition of the problem and the growing consensus for addressing it. Since the Long Island Index described the \brain drain\ in February 2004 the issue has received wide attentson. By year's end a poll found that 74 percent of Long Islanders ranked the lack of afford- able housing as either a \very serious\ of \extremely senous\ problem What's more. 67 percent support government action to increase the supply of moder ate-priced housing. That's an important step. But turning consensus into action is itself a challenge. Long Island is a region of its own. but it has yet to learn how to act like one. We need to find ways to get our civic and political organizations working together Much,. including our ecoromic future. depends on it. This is one in a series of articles examining aspects of life on Long Island, presented by the Long Island Inder. Carrie Meek Gallagher is project director of the Index.
