Your liver helps digest your food, detoxifies alcohol and other poisonous chemicals, manufactures pro- teins to help keep you healthy, and much more. You cannot live without a liver. If you have been abusing alcohol, you have also been abusing your liver. Drinking too much alcohol, however, is not the only bad habit that is bad for the liver Taking medications when they are not necessary, mixing pills and alcohol, and being careless with chemicals can also harm the liver. During National Liver Awareness Month in October, you can show your liver the respect it deserves for jobs well done The Medical Society of the State of New York offers the following recom- mendations, which are adapted from guidelines of the Amencan Liver Foundation. «* If you drink alcohol, have no more than two drinks per day * Avoid street drugs. * Avoid taking unnecessary medica- tons. « Do not mix medicines without the advice ofyour doctor * Do not mix alcohol with other drugs and medications. * Be careful when using chemicals for cleaning, painting, removing mildew or killing bugs. Wear a mask, and if spraying inside, make surethe room is well venti- lated. When you spray, handle or know that insecticides are in the air -- wear a mask, hat, gloves and clothing to cover as much of your skin as possible. * Watch your diet. While poor nutntion is generally not a cause of liver disease - otherthan alcoholic liver disease and liver disease among starving populations -- eating a well-balanced and nounshing diet can helpyour Iver to properly do its job. Good nutation can also help a damaged hver to regenerate new cells; and in some lhver diseases, nutntion is an essential form of treatment. The Amencan Liver Foundation, however. strongly advises patients with liver disease \not to take megay itamin therapy of to use nutritional products bought in special stores or by catalogue without consulting a doctor.\ * Follow a regularexercise routine * Know the risks of hepatitis A, B and C and protect yourself from these dis eases Protect yourself from hepatitis Hepatius A. B and C are viral infec- uons that can cause inflammation of the liver. Hepautts A 1s spread through oral con- tact with contaminated fecal matter. You can help protect yourself by washing your hands after using the bathroom or chang- ing a diaper, by avonding contamunated water and -by not having oral/anal sex. Hepatitus B is transmitted through blood and body fluuds. To help protect yourself, avord having unprotected sex with - or using the razor or toothbrush of - an infected person, and do not inject illegal drugs. Hepautes C is spread prmanly through direct contact with blood, which can occur when contaminated needles are used to inject rHlegal drugs and for tattooing and body piercing.
