A series of interviews with the students and their families will eventually determine stu- dents' suitability for the program. The cost for the year abroad is approx- imately $1,500 to $2,000, which covers application fees, the cost of applying for visas and passports, insurance and money for emergencies. The student's family is rspuonsible for providing an open round np ticket to and from the student's desti- nation. Room and board are provided by the host family. Students receive a month- ly allowance of $50 to $100 from the host Rotary club, Cnffin said. He noted that college admissions boards look very favorably on participa- uon in the program because it adds dimen- mon to a student's experience and indi- cates a certain level of matunty. Giffin also pointed out the significant savings involved in traveling abroad as a Youth Exchange student, noting that a «ultural/study year abroad typically costs at least $8.000 to $10,000 To be eligible, students must be 15 to I% years old by July 31 of the year of departure Giffin saad that students usually whedule the expenence for their junior vear Some countries, such as France, sug gest that students have a certain degree of proficiemy in the language or be willing to take lessons to achieve fluency. While Youth Exchange students attend local schools in their destunation country. (nffin said, they do not receive school credit for their year abroad. He sard that students work with their counselors so that they can complete their academic program at Northport High School in three rather than four years Although over 200 students expressed an interest in the program, Giffin sard that generally only two to four students are selected as Youth Exchange students, with the Northport community sponsoring roughly the same number of foreign exchange students each year. So far, stu- dents have expressed an interest in visiting Brazil, Canada and Japan. Northport High School student Amber Farrell, 17, spent a year in small French town and said, thanks to the experience. she is fluent in French, \It was amazing,\ Amber said, \You meet people from all over the world, and you also learn about yourself.\ Jazmin Garcia, a student from Argentina who is staying with a focal host family, reflected on the two months that she has spent here. \It changes the way you think,\ Jazmin sard. \It's a really great experience.
