MORGAN At 12:34 pm on October 13 on Scudder Avenue a tree was reported down. On armval of officer, tree was removed and Northport Highway Department was contacted for removal of limb. From - Norwood - Avenue - and Seacove Road came an anonymous call of a tree limb , hanging precariously (M over the roadway on | October 9 at 11:24 p am - Highway was MEW contacted. A downed tree was called in on October 12 at 4 45 am from Woodside Avenue near Main Street Responding officer also tound a downed wire LIPA was contacted. but due to heavy volume. no response time was - available _- Northport _ Fire Department was notified, but were told they would not be needed. if no fire ensued More downed tree limbs were reported on the 12th at 4:40 am on Scudder Avenue near Church Street Highway was alerted, but responding officer was able to remove the limb to side of road. A - tree branch came down on to the - roadway - on Laure! Avenue near Scudder Avenue on the 9th at 18 min- utes past midnight \ I1 was removed to the sidewalk. No injuries. Cops warn of I.D. theft through jury duty scam Suffolk County Police Department's Identity Theft Unit has learned. by monitoring various media outlets throughout the United States, that a new identity theft scam has been detected. Suffolk County residents should be forewarned that a scheme involving jury duty has been exposed in other jurisdictions nationally, but has yet to be reported by any victims here. The scam works like this: The vic- tim receives a telephone call from a subject purporting to be a representa- tive from the court system. The caller tells the victim that he has missed his date for jury duty and a warrant for his arrest has been issued. The scam preys on the victim's distress at possibly being arrested and his need to right this error, which causes the victim to drop his guard. a e victim clams received a notice for jury duty and the caller then asks him several questions -- for verification purposes. Of course, the caller needs the vietim's name, date of birth, social security number and other personal identifying infor- mation for the phony verification pro- cess. The information is then used to assume the victim's identity and/or commit frauds in the victim's name. The - Suffolk - County - Police Department's Identity Theft Unit wants to remind the public to never reveal their personal identifying infor- mation to anyone who has made an unsolicited contact by phone or email. Vigilance is your first defense in pre- venting identity theft. Before releasing any of your personal information over the phone or in an email, always verify the request through independent means. Using a public directory, look up the local address and telephone number of the government agency, financial institution, or business that contacted you.
