The pair chose to make a go of it on their own. Before their scheduled return trip on Friday, they expected to sleep in the truck or in tents at makeshift sites along the way: they had been advised before they lett that official camp sites near their destination were closed \A lot of people are responding really poutively. but when you get too many people i 'It just became this \roll down the hill as fast as we can move.\ - MARTIN STONE can become a hindrance,\ Stone said. The idea to drive to the South arose out of a concern that funds from the federal government and various agen- cies might not be donated directly and quickly enough for survivors with immediate needs. Hansen told Stone he had a mind to pack his truck with supplies and just go. \I said, 'Okay. let's go,\\ Stone recalled. \We both looked at each other and smiled. We asked our wives ... and they said okay. It just became this 'roll down the hill as fast as we can move.\\ Stace Hansen. who stayed in Northport this week to look after the bakery as well as her and Flemming's five children. said, \There are a lot of people down there that haven't been reached. Jocelyn Zadrozny and Barbara Hanna - who work as ades to Assemblyman Andy Raia in the office over Copenhagen Bakery - have over the past week or so purchased baby wipes and Huggies, which they dropped off at the back of the bakery, where the Hansens would work after hours packing items. Zadrozny said secing Hansen and Stone ready to go the distance is what inspired her to donate. \Just the self- sacrifice that they're doing.\ she said. \They're actually diving there. How could I not take par of that?\ On Monday aftemoon, Northport attomey Amy B Levins dropped off four whute, wicker \care baskets\ cus- tomized with goods for new mothers and babies. Levins said what really mored her to act 1s the plight of the chil dren and muthers \who don't have anything\ and the desire to \give them dignuty.\ She had even considered personalizing the gifis with a note to recipients Finally on Monday night, the Northport field hockey | team, among offers, showed up to help pack those last minute items. Stone and Hansen more than matched its cash dona- tions out of thezr.own pockets, purchasing supplies at the local Costco, Staples, Trader Joe's, Eckerd, and Target Most store manage claimed that corporate oversight prevented them fromm discounting purchases for the cause However, Stone said that one sympathetic manager at Trader Joe's did end up donating \a big box of balloons\ as something forchildren on the reservation to play with. Stone reflected on how the effort not only aids recipi- ents, but also reassures local residents of how their money is being spent and when their contributions will be received. Some local residents have expressed concem about fundraising fraud. Meeting Stone for the first time recent- ly. his mother's doctor handed Stone $100 and said, \I was going to donate this to the cause, but I feel better knowing that it's going to someone who's going to use it.\ Stone said, *The fact that you allow the local people become part of the event. they feel that they've con- tributed. More than 131,000 Red Cross workers from 50 states are aiding the effort. All in all, the organiza- tion's response to Hurricane Katrina has been 20 times greater than all hurricanes in 2004 combined, according to Gardiner. The Red Cross requests donations of cash or checks rather than supplies because, she said, \We have no storage supplies and it costs too much to ship the goods.\ Rather, the organization looks to purchase things whenever possible in the affected New volungeers are needed.
