With shoes and Lipstick Jungle in hand, Sex and the City author visits Book Revue BY ELISE PEARLMAN Last Thursday visitors to Book Revue in Huntington experienced a thrill as Candace Bushnell, author of the book Sex and the City, read an excerpt from her lat- est novel, Lipstick Jungle (Hyperion: 2005) and answered questions about the award-winning HBO series she inspired. Like lead Sex and the City character Carrie Bradshaw, Bushnell rose to fame when a series of columns that she wrote about single life in Manhattan for the New York Observer became the basis for a book. The storyline was then adapted into the television series Sex and the City, starring Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Cynthia Nixon and Kristin Davis. Bushnell said that she watched the audi- won tapes and had dinner with Sarah Jessica Parker. \The casting took time,\ Bushnell said. The show, which debuted in 1998, enthralled audiences with its frank treat- ment of social and personal issues for six consecutive seasons. The series ended in February 2004 with Bradshaw, the narra- tor and a hopeless romantic, finding true love with her \Mr. Right,\ a powerful, rich and somewhat older man whom the audience had known only as Mr. Big, until the final episode when his \real\ name is revealed. At one point Bushnell elicited laughter from the audience when she held up the pair of shoes that she was wearing. The show is credited with expanding the pub- lic's awareness of high fashion by weav- ing Carrie's love of pricey accoutrements, such as Manolos (shoes designed by the prominent Spaniard, Manolo Blahnik, that sell for between $500 and $2500 a pair), into the storyline. While Sex and the City focused on the love lives of four thirty-something women, Lipstick Jungle follows a tio of new characters into the next decade where they are faced with the dilemmas Magazine editor Nico O'Neilly, movie executive Wendy Healy, and fashion designer Victoria Ford are high-powered women whose struggles to stay at the top of the game are complicated by their rela- tionships. Bushnell described her new work as more philosophical, conveying the message, \You are responsible for making your life what you want it to be, and for making what you have work. If you have spent your life looking for Mr. Big, you should ask yourself why.\ Admitting that she was the model for character Carrie Bradshaw, Bushnell said that in writing Lipstick Jungle she \was drawn to the idea of a female character who is creative, artistic and struggles to be taken seriously.\ Bushnell sard that she identifies strongly with Victoria Ford, the independent ___ self-made __ fashion entrepreneur. Noting that there 1s interest in turning Lipstick Jungle into a series, Bushnell said, \A deal is in the works,\ although the details have not yet been finalized. After the reading, Bushnell fielded questions regarding the Sex and the City series. Bushnell, who married three years ago at 43, admitted that the character Mr. Big was inspired by a real-life boyfriend and that he had left her for another woman. Saying that she is a \more serious than people think,\ Bushnell described herself as a disciplined writer who gets up between 4 and 6 am to write for six to eight hours a day, with the goal of pro- ducing 10 pages. Saying that her novels are \highly crafted,\ Bushnell likened the writing process to that of studying the violin. Bushnell has been writing for 20 years, indicating that a great deal of rewriting and re-examination of \ feel- ings\ goes into the agonizing process that results in the final polished novel. **You have to do the work,\ she said, adding that her success came after years of struggle and that several of her half- Continued on page A10
