LAVALLE STADIUM Tigers young, but enthusiastic BY JOHN WESTERMANN On the gorgeous Saturday morning of this past Labor Day ig \ weckend, head coach Don Strasser and his Northport boys' \~] anccer squad are hard at work \After you pass the ball.\ he says. \I want you to run hard Maybe running hard won't get you the ball back. but it might open up your teammate. and then the next guy, until we get a shot. So run hard.\ The Tigers are coming off a down year, looking to rebuild and bounce back Twelve seniors have moved on and must be replaced \We'll miss them all, but mostly Al Lucia, our goalie, Tom Sprague and Matt Burrows,\ said Strasser. \This year we will rely on Pete Fillipone, Matt Powers and Andrew Cangemi for leadership. And we will mix in a good group of younger boys who have a tot of enthusiasm for the game \ Juniors Adam Leone and Harry Garrecht also saw playing time as sophomores and should be ready to accept larger roles. He feels the club systemcan only help the school team. \At least they're play ing all year.\ The 2005 Tigers have elected Fillipone, Powers and junior goalie Alex Penny to serve as captains this year. After preseason scrimmages with East Islip, Ward Melville and Islip, the county champion Commack Cougars come call- ing at 4 pm on September 19. The first road game forthe Tigers is two days later against Bay Shore on September 21 at 4:30 pm. On October 1. Catholic league powerChaminade will visit Northport at noon. Tough teams for a young squad, maybe the toughest league in the county.
