Theater plan Continued from page Al Tannenbaum's request to raise the peak of the theater above 35 feet could sur continued debate. De Stefano sad it is a visibility issue and he wants to sit down with Tannenbaum to discuss that further. A cursory review has been given to other questrons he raised, such as the noise that air handlers would create and the odor that might emanate from a proposed café in the theater. Aside from his concerns, De Stefano - a resident for more than five years - indicated that he is generally supportive of the theater renovation. \The theater was operational when I moved in,\ he said. \That was fine by me. | went to the theater there; it was great. It started to deteriorate after it went vacant.\ He added that the back of the theater has become a hangout and he has seen graffits there. \I'm thnilled that someone's buying it.\ In the meantime, Tannenbaum has, answered the BZA's concern about how the theater would accommo- date parking with a proposal to designate the American Legion Hall parking lot for valet parking. \It would be nice to add parking, but as we all know there isn't any of that available,\ he said. The issue of the marquee is still hanging. Its design and materials have not been decided, but Tannenbaum said he imagines the marquee will hang out over the sidewalk. \It won't be imposing,\ he said. The marquee must be in keeping with the village's architectural codes, He expects the entire theater renovation to-cost up to about $3 million, he added. It typica ly takes three to five © years to raise that amount, he said, but added, \I am hop- ing that I can cut that {time] in half.\ The BZA meeting workshop :s scheduled for Thursday, September 8 at 5:30 pm in village hall. according to the BZA secretary, and will attend to vari- ous applications from last week's agenda that the board did not have time to address during that meeting. Sterra Continued from page A1 through its fund-raising activities. 'To Sierra's surprise, chamber members at the meeting reached into their pockets and immediately contributed $244. Siermma's good fortune continued as Martin, along with the East Northport Rotary Club, added winnings from the club's 50/50 Raffle to the money that she had already collected. Her grand total has topped $700 thanks to con- tributions that have poured in from neighbors, friends and family, including Northport High School alumni from the Class of 1985 celebrating their 20th reunion. When asked how she arrived at this altruistic under- taking, the Northport Middle School sixth-grader said that it was part of a community service project that her fifth-grade teacher, Mrs. Fagan, assigned at St. Paul's Lutheran School in East Northport. Mrs. Fagan had seen the film Pay it Forward and asked her students to come up with ideas that would help others, Sierrasaid. -Based on a novel by Catherine Ryan Hyde, the film captured national attention for its story of a mini-revolution that a to come up with projects that would change the world. A Pay it Forward Foundation has been established to bring the book's message to classrooms across the country. Ryan urged people to join her daughter in the Walk for Life. Everyone is eligible to participate and the event will take place rain or shine. Ryan indicated that net pro- ceeds will benefit the Gift of Life, adding that the Christina & Paul Martin Foundation (CPMF) has raised $130,00 for the program over the last two years. Martin said that this year he hopes to sign up 1,000 walkers for the Walk for Life and expects each to bring in a sponsorship of $250. \Sierra has more than tripled her goal as a walker and there are still several weeks left before the event.\ Adding that Sierra is \very dedicated and a high achiever,\ Martin indicated that he wasn't totally surprised by her efforts. \[Sierral comes from a wonderful family of giving people in the Rotarian theme of putting others ahead of themselves. Her mother is incredibly dedicated to saving children's lives. She is personally responsible for the hosting of 50 children. The family puts a lot of time into helping the world become a better place.\ Registration for the Walk for Life takes place at 9:30 am in Paiking Field 5. The five-mile walk will begin at 10 am, with raffies and prizes being awarded for the youngest walker and the top fund raisers.
