§ t BY ELISE PEARLMAN David Storch, the new coordinator of Northport High School's International Baccalaureate dB) Program, is also a mathematics teacher and an advisor to the high school's chapter of the National Honor Society. His work enables him to influence students and the community as a whole. Yet, considering his passion for personal inter- action and for helping others, many people might be sur- prised to learn that Storeh once worked at the forefront of scientific technology. Storch. a Northport High School graduate, earned his Bachelor of Science degree in physics from Stony Brook University. He then studied materials science and enginecring at Northwestern University in filinois, focusing on solid-state electronics and the development of thin film matenals for the semiconductor industry. Storch worked as a materials scienust for Hewleu Packard until he realized that he wanted to make a dif- ferent kind of impact on the world. Finding scientific research impersonal. he craved a focus on people. ideas. discussion and thoughts In 1997. he left private industry to obtain his teaching credentials. Storch considers humself first and foremost a teacher. and secondly a teacher of math For Storch. establishing a relanonship| of mutual respect with stu dents is tantamount to teaclhing academic content Storch's courses have ged from remedial ninth grade algebra to Advanced Placement (AP) calculus and IB mathematical methods §torch's exellence in teach ing was recognized with the Stony Brook (niversity Edward Lambe Teaching Award in 1999 and the Joseph B Whitehead Educator of Distinction Award in 2003 In (XXL. Their efforts were motrvated by concem for Northport High School teacher David Deutsch and retured clementary school teacher Chins Pendergast, both of whom have ALS. In 2004, the honor society organized the Hoops for ALS Festival,. featuring a basketball tournament with over 100 participants. Students sold paper basketballs for a dollar each. The event raised $26,000. The honor soci- ety 's commutment deepened when about 40 students vis- ited the Robert Packard Center for ALS Research located at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. The students' donation which was recogmzed by the center as \onc of the largest grassroots efforts [in ALS fundraising] by stu- dents.\ Storch said. He added that Northport High School student Katherine Yi is at the Robert Packard Center conducting ALS research. Iv in Storch's ettorts to make the honor society more than an academic institution and to involve students who are not yet part of the socurety As new coordinator of the IB program, Storch wel comes the challenge of expanding course offerings and increasing the number of diploma candidates He said that the IB philosophy has the potential to postively impact all students and create the \hest possible learn ers.\ According to Storch, the IB program allows teachers to assess students in a non-traditional fashion and become more sensitive to alternate learning styles Eventually the whole student body will reap the bene fits as changes \trickle down\ through the system Storch will continue to teach a few IB and AP mathe- ments for an advanced graduate certificate im school district administration Storch and his wife. Ellen. Greenlawn residents with two young children. host an annual barbecue for recent and former students.
