e HE A LT Ho___ Two new insect repellents recommended by CDC New repellents smell better, are less greasy and protect as well as low doses of DEET This season, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is recom- mending two new active ingredients for insect repellents - picandin, a chem cal, and oil of lemon eucalyptus, a plant based repellent - to help protect you and your family against mosquitoes and other pests. The CDC has recommended DEET repellents for several years, but many people object to them. Currently available products with the new ingredi- ents smell better, are less greasy and pro- tect as well as repellents with low doses of DEET. Picandin has been used in repellents in ather parts of the world and in higher IN THIS EDITION: concentrations has even been effective against tropical mosquitoes. The CDC cautions that orl of lemon eucalyptus has not been tested in children under age three or against mosquitoes that spread malaria and some other diseases that occur outside the United States.
