The New York public libraries invite children of all ages to sign up for the 2005 summer reading program, Tune In @ Your Library. Libraries play a critical role in main- taining reading levels over the summer, which is as important as the structured reading curniculum during the academic year, according to the state Education Department. Children who participate in library summer reading programs return to school in the fall ready to learn at grade level, educators say. \Children need years, the Education Department reported. According to educational research, if | children select their own reading materi- als, their positive experience leads to - more time spent reading and improved |- reading ability. Petrone and Councilman Mark Cuthbertson recently announced that an agreement has been reached with the U.S. Postal Service to reopen the Huntington Village Post Office parking lot for after-hour and weekend public use. Several months ago the parking lot, located on the west side of the Gerard Street post office, was closed to the public dunng evening hours and on weekends due to hability and security concerns. \This unexpected closure translated into an immediate economic hardship for our downtown village businesses due to a loss of valuable parking spaces.\ Petrone said. \Within days, the town commenced negotrations with the Postal Service in hopes of reaching an agreement to re- open this lot.
