Sherman says that the man that he would later know as the admimistrator of the high school music program and as the director of the community band was part of his earliest childhood mem- ories of visits to the park. Sherman remembers hearing Krueger play in a trumpet trio with Ken Butterfield and Bill Baker. Epstein, who manages public relations for the band, says, \Although I'm not currently playing, it's allowed me to hear how good the band really is from the other side of the podium ~ Epstein helped plan the band's 40th anniversary celebration,. which includ- ed the surprise dedication of the Robert W Krueger bandstand. \complete with a rock and a commemotative plaque ~ As Epstein points out. \The fact that he drives up from Flonda every year to continue conducting the band says more about him as a person than I could ever put into words. The man is a gem.\ In remembering the music education program that she experienced as a Northport High School student, Epstein says. \He buill Northport's fabulous music program and made it the envy of just about every school district on the planet. Quite a few students who come through the district's music program go on to be music educators themselves - what a wonderful legacy for a man who's a ventable institution! 1 guess if there's one way to describe Bob Krueger and how respected he :s by the Northport community, it would be to refer to him as the Music Man of Northport |- that really says at all in a nutshell ~ Remaining Community Band concerts Only two concerts to go as the Northport Community Band plays its fourth Thursday evening concert under the stars at the Robert W. Krueger Bandstand on the Village Green. The group's fourth concert, tonight, July 21, will feature guest conductor Tom Gellert, director of music education for the Harborficlds School District and music director of the Hunungton Community Band, in the groups' annual conductor/podium exchange program. Tom will conduct 76 Trombones from The Music Man and Philip Sparke's Huntingdon Celebration, which was commis- sioned by the Town of Huntington's sister city in England and played by the community band there. The band's special guests will be the Island Hills Chorus (a chapter of Sweet Adelines International, a world- wide organization of women singing four-part a cappella harmony), which recently won the second-place medal in their regional competition. This week's sponsors are the Rotary Club of Northport, NY, Inc. (Jim Ryan, president) and the East Northport Rotary Club (Duprea Brozietto, president). The final concert, on July 28, will . include a.tribute to late band member Burnie Rydzeski, who anchored the special style and spirit, including Duke \ Ellington's Sophisticated Ladies and Scott Joplin's Maple Leaf Rag. Guest conducting will be Izzet Mergen, Northport-East Northport School District director of music edu- cation, who has promised something \new and exciting.,\ The last concert of the season wouldn't be complete without the group's traditional nd finale: Tchaikovsky's F812 Overture, com- plete with \stereo\ cannons. The Northport \analog\ cannon is designed, built and primed to go by James McAward, while the digital cannon is provided by band member John Dzinanka of SUNY Farmingdale, Al DePace of Advance Sound, and Steven and Michael Bender of BANA Electric Corp. Special pre-concert music will be provided by Mr. N..cl's Sticky Molasses - Noontume - Downtown Dixieland Band in front of the band- stand at 8 pm. Sponsors are the Northport-East Northport School District (Arlene Munson, board president) and the Huntington Summer Arts Festival, which is presented by the Town of Huntington and produced by the Huntington Arts Council.
