Editorials Make parking easier, not harder As it becomes increasingly difficult for local merchants to compete with big box stores, villages should be paving the way for improved parking for both cus- tomers and employees near local busi- nesses, not discouraging it. The Village of Northport Board of Trustees' recent decision to restrict park- ing between the hours of 7 and 10 am along Main Street and Woodbine Avenue appears to overlook the problems this could create for working people. The restricted hours were designed to save the village money. according to the mayor. Previously, the street sweepers started work at 5 am to finish up by rush hour. Starung the work at 7 am would cut overtime payments. The mayor said that although the Village Board has approved the new restrictions. he believes they will reconsider before ordering that the policy be fully imple- mented. We hope they do so at their next board meeting on August 16. We also hope that the message to not implement this policy will be passed along to the village police chief and traf- tu. constables. Don't hassle people with unnecessary tickets. Don't create a situa- on in which they must compete - or wait endlessly -for vacant parking spaces in the village park. only to be late tor work We feel honored We thank the Board of Education of the Northport -East Northport School District tor the confidence they have shown in us by making /he Times of Northport & East Northport their official new spaper for legal notices and publica- tions We teel especially honored because we have always believed that school and wdik ston ReWw»~ is id great impoflance in our community Indeed. the school dis- trict ies us all together and gives us high property values and great cause tor pride. Opinion Thank you for support over the years TO THE EDITOR: A personal thanks to our community for their sup- port over the years and in the May election. Though my quest for re-elec- uon was not successful, be assured that 1 shall continue my commit- ment to the welfare of our stu- dents, staff and community on a darly basis. During the 15 years of my tenure on the Board of Education, much was accomplished in terms of enriched programs for each child: Reading and Recovery and the Wilson program for those in reed of additonal support, the Academy of Finance for those looking to enter the world of business, the Academy of Informaton Technology for the students interested in technology, and our newest enhancement, the Internatuonal Baccalaureate, to name a few. I am realizing our wishes? Lots of things, of course, but My commitment to the school district, and the children it serves, and to the community at large has been, and will continue to be, constant. the main one, I think, is whether we link our wishes to our active work. It may take months or years, but it's far more likely to happen when we care so much that we'li work as hard as we can to make it happen. And when we are work - ing toward the realization of our wishes, some of our greatest strengths come from the encour- agement of people who care about us. - F. Rogers I believe Theodore Roosevelt said it best: \Far and away the best prize that life offers is the chance to work hard at work worth doing.\ My commitment to the school district, and the children it serves, and to the community at large has been, and will continue to be, constant It has been a privilege to serve on the Board of Educatuon of this school district, and I thank the com- munity for making it possible. I am passionately. vehemently and emphatically opposed to this program. It labels a group of already advantaged students by giving them a more costly education and an opportunity to meet with interna- tronal evaluators. and it sends our tax dollars out of the country | guess labeling can be good or bad However. I view the IB program as a way to circumvent the law by isolating and creating an intellectually elite group of students It places them above the law because the socialization process that is viewed as so important tor regular students is not important for them The court stated that there are untque benefits a disabled child may obtain from integration in a regu- lar classroom - Furthermore, it is the school's obliga- tron to provide supplementary aids and services to accommodate the cluld's disabilities. There are sever al different strategies that can be used to accomplish this goal, like modifying the curriculum or parallel instruction. How can any administrator in the Northport-East Northport School District or any member of the board honestly state that inclusion, the right for special edu- catuon students to be integrated into the regular class- room, can benefit average students, and at the same time support the IB program. which segregates intel- lectually gifted students? You are not allowed into the IB program unless you can do the work. Why should residents in a school district accept these viewpoints. which are diametrically opposed and therefore cannot make any sense? The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act requires states to address the unique needs of a dis- abled child I think a law should be passed requiring states to address the unique talents of regular, average stu- dents Regular. average students are not being treated tairly They are not getting their fair share of money They are paying for inclusion The school district is giving these hids nothing The only group who can change this are their par- ents Larned. they can become a political group and make history Jane Goldblatt East Northport School district's official newspaper TOTHE EDITOR: It is with great pleasure that I notify you that at the annual organization meeting of the Board of Education of the Northport-East Northport Union Free School District, held on Wednesday evening. July 6, The Times of Northport & EastNorthport was designated as the official newspaper for the district publications and legal notices for the 2005-06 school year. We thank you for your support and extend our best wishes for the new school year. Christina A. McCulloch Northport-East Northport School District Clerk Forget helicopter noise - there's a war on TO THE EDITOR: Your article about helicopter noise is just that - noise about nothing (\Chopper noise irks neighbors.\ July 14]. Senator Schumer should concentrate on more important issues, unless he finds himself unable to deal with real problems. I too live under the flight path of the helicopters and do not consider them a problem of the same magnitude as lawn mowers and Frankenblowers. Just imagine living near the LIE. We should not get excited about petty problems when we have real issues like the war in fraq: Paul Greenberg Miller Place
