The residents should decide who they want. Also, it's in the best public interest not to appoint someone who has been on the board previously or who ran during this election.\ Mumm did not return calls for comment. Before the board had voted last Wednesday, Superintendent of Schools William Brosnan advised the eight remaining board members of other options. They could continue conduct- ing district business with aneight-mem- ber board, with every resolution requir- ing at least five votes to passas is need- ed on a nine-member board. They could also hold a special election to fill the vacancy. To do so, they would need to set an election date, make an announce- ment in the paper. request petitions, hire poll workers and rent voting machines. The process would cost the district about $15,000, McCulloch estimated. Appointing a new member, she sard, would cost nothing aside from the price of postage to mail applications to the five candidates who ran and lost in May. In his letter, Burton also had asked that the board consider avoiding a spe- cial election and appoint instead. \Given the fact that the district has already incurred the cost of conducting two pub- lic elections, it hardly seems worth- while, from a costperspective, to have a third election,\ Burton stated. All residents interested in applying for the position can pick up an applica- tion in the district clerk's office or download one from the district website at http://northport.k 12.ny.us. The board will meet in executive ses- sion to review applications and decide whom to interview. If an applicant receives five votes from the board, then the applicant will be approved during a public session and start immediately. If he or she is not approved, the board will deliberate further on whether to fill the position. McCulloch said the board would probably discuss the process on August 2 and appoint a new member by August 29. During the organizational meeting, board member Steven Meyerowitz applauded Burton for his service to the district. \He and I disagreed on many issues,\ Meyerowitz said. \We did agree, however, on the issues which related to the education of students in our community. 1 respected no other board member more. We will miss his wisdom and his advocacy.\ Patricia Proven contributed to this report.
