SECOND INTENTIONAL EXPOSURE Summer teams head to Baseball Heaven Long Island Heat rally to defeat Huntington Hurricanes, 5-3 BY ROBERT LEUNER The Long Island Heat came from behind to beat the Huntington Hurricanes 5-3 in a rain and darkness shortened game in the Boys of Summer baseball league action last week. Despite the wildness, DeForca believed both starters fared well. \I thought it was a well-pitched game by both of them,\ the coach said. \I came down to the wire with some clutch pitching and time- ly hitting.\ Ducks scoop two against Nashua The Long Island Ducks took both games of a day-night doubleheader from the Nashua Pride this past Sunday, July 10. In game one, the Ducks shut out the Pride 4-0 in front of 6,284 fans at Citibank Park. Pete Rose Jr. hit his fifth homerun of the sea- son and first at home to give the Flock all the runs they would need. In the second game, 6,503 fans saw Long Islandtake out the North Division's first half champs 8-4. Lance Davis picked up the win after fanning five and limiting the Pride's offense tosix hits and two unearned runs in seven innings of work. V Game one was locked in a scoreless tie until Rose took Rob Averette deep to right in the bottom of the fourth with a two-run shot. A sacrifice fly by Carlos Hernandez in the fifth sent Steve Torrealba home to extend Long Island's lead to three. Pat Lennon scored in the sixth on a wild pitch by Geoff Goetz to round out the game's scoring 4-0. Justin Lamber (5-0) tossed eight scoreless innings and fanned four, while allowing four hits and two walks. Mike Crudale came on in the ninth and tossed a 1-2-3 inning. In game two, Long Island took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a Dominick Ambrosini sacrifice fly that scored Chris Latham. Nashua scored two unearned runs in the second to take a one-run lead. The Ducks regained the lead in the fifth after scor- ing three runs to go ahead 4-2. Latham started the rally with a two-run double that was followed up by an RBI single from Hernandez. Lennon scored in the sixth on a double play groundout to put Long Island up 5-2. Jason Johnson, Jimmy Goclz and Hernandez each touched home in the seventh to put the Flock ahcad by six. Jimmy Hurst cut the lead to four in the cighth with a two-run homer off reliever Crudale that rounded out the game's scoring. Crudale yielded two runs on four hits while striking ont two in one inning of work. Todd Erdos closed out the game with a three-up, three-down ninth inning. Petke's 94th mimmute header from a corner kick was cleared off the goal line by Honda Match MVP Mano Rodrigues of the Crew Colorado defender Ritchie Kotschau competed for the Levittown Soccer Club and Hicksville Hawks. He started and was substituted in the 74th minute. Rapids® midfielder Kyle Beckerman. who played for Commack United, was in for the entire match, just Ike Petke For the Crew, forward Knox Cameron started and was substituted in the 53rd minute for new acquisi- ton John Wolymec. Cameron played for the LUSL's Hewlet/Lawrence Blue Streak while Wolyniec was a star forward with the NorthporUYCow Harbor Celtics. Midficlder Kyle Martino, who played for Huntington's HBC New York United, started and hit the post in the 14th minute. He had made a slashing run across the top of the penalty area that beat sever- al defenders and then bested keeper Joe Cannon with a low shot that struck the outside of the post. Martino was replaced in the 75th minute by. detender Chrs Wingert. who won a $1,000 LIJSL Scholarship in 2000 and played for the league's clubs in North Babylon. Deer Park and Commack Forward Edson Buddle came on in the 80th minute in the LIUSL. he was Martino's teammate with HBC New York United. The game's only score was on a penalty kick by Crew forward Cornell Glen in the 67th minute after Kotschau had upended Rodrigues Summer fishing trips Legislator Lynne Nowick announced that the Suffolk County Police Athletic League is conducting summer fishing trips for children ages eight and over on board the Taryn-Ann charter boat each Wednesday. starting July 13 until August 24. The cost is $12 per child which includes poles. bait and four hours of fishing. plus cleaning of fish for children. Children will be supervised and assisted by the PAL and the staff of the Taryn-Ann. Children are advised to bring lunch. Departure is from Captree Boat Basin at Captree State Park, off Robert Moses Causeway in Bay Shore. The Taryn-Ann charter boat leaves promptly at 10 am and returns at 2 pm. \Long Island is a wonderful place for children to spend the summer with our many beaches, parks, and programs that the County and Towns offer I am delighted that the Suffolk County PAL is able to pro- vide this fantastic opportunity for young people to meet other children from Long Island while spending a summer day on the water fishing,\ said Legislator Nowick. Participation is on a first come, first served basis. Applications are available at the front desk of Police Headquarters, 30 Yaphank Avenue, Yaphank, or by calling 852-6109. All applications and payments must be- received at the office at least one week prior to your chosen date. There is a limit of two trips per cluld for the summer. Summer walks on LI trails Various Long Island Greenbelt hikes will be offered this summer from July through August. Starting this Friday, July 15 there will be a boardwalk hike Janes beginning 7 pm. Participants will walk approximately four miles of the boardwalk from Field 6 west to the end. All can meet at the Field 6 boardwalk entrance. On Saturday, July 16 Nancy Duffrin will give a class at the Trails Information Center on how to use a compass for navigating in the woods. Participants will walk the paths behind the trails, located 1/4 mile north of the LIE, exit 70 in Manorville. The following day, interested people can wander the boardwalks and trails of Lakeland County Park and the north end of Connetquot Park Preserve. All will meet at the Lakeland parking lot at 9 am. Northport to hold annual basketball golf classic The Northport Lady Tigers will hold its fourth annual basketball golf classic July 25 at Crab Meadow Golf Course in Northport. The tee off time begins at 1 pm. The cost is $165 and includes green fees, driving range, cart, beverages throughout the day, all meals and golf momentos.
